none of the friends i grew up with 'sold out' to anything, luckily. but they did go onto get married and have kids and buy an SUV and a house in agrestic, so i guess that is kinda selling out, considering i used to smoke weed and go on clockwork orange-ish escapades with them.

i would go on about how they're tools and i'm the smart one but they're happy so whatever

yeah it's different.

but i would at least hope you have tried to have a conversation about it and have let them know that it bothers you. if after that they're still the same way, then it's not on you to fix it, and it's not reasonable to ask you to cut ties.

but

y'know. i think a lot of people let their family members get away with too much without any protestation. but it appears as though i'm in the minority on that.

this is absolutely true. So many people still think that behind-closed-doors bigotry is acceptable (e.g. sending hate mail about muslims to your family) and a lot of this has to do with people's general unwillingness to stand up to their friends and family about important issues. Even if you can't get someone to change their opinion, expressing disgust, disappointment, and disapproval of such attitudes makes offenders less likely to repeat hateful things again. Social pressure is a very powerful motivator, and so what if uncle joe still secretly hates gays? It sucks that he's an ignorant moron, but if he isn't repeating that opinion anymore it helps to stem the flow of such ideas between people and in the long run might help to reduce the number of people who share those sentiments.

naw, they definitely know all but one of their kids are left-leaning - if not from facebook posts alone, we'vehad many a-discussion. Nowadays we keep it civil but we'vedefinitely had tense moments. My mom, though she's the bigger holy roller, is more open to talking about current events. My dad knows where his kids stand on most things.

Although last year I had just bought a book about ufo's and my nephew was curious about itj my dad got irrationaly angry about it and said "having an open mind means you believe any and everything". My mom was the quick mediator in that 'dispute'. It was just weirdly kind of out of character for him.

I just want to rant a bit quietly so I came here cause why not?
I'm lying in bed feeling disappointment, netphoria. For my girlfriends birthday this year, I suprised her with a 3 day trip away, where I cooked some awesome food and spoilt her etc.
Today is my birthday. I got a torch. And some socks. Nothing fancy about the torch, we aren't talking maglights here. Just an ordinary torch (???) and 3 pairs of white socks. Anyway, I'm probably too old to care, but I feel disappointed. At first I kinda thought it was a joke, but it wasn't. Am I being terribly ungrateful? Ah.

I know what you mean. I never get anything for my birthday besides a card or two, and that's how I was basically raised but I do get that hope that someone will care enough and want to do more.

But I don't buy other people birthday presents either so I can't complain too much.
