I'd like to think I'm in the middle of the exact opposite - atrocious opinions brought about by being brainwashed growing up and now i'm slowly branching out and learning all kinds of shit and being happy being open-minded.

i dunno - i learned a while ago that being hardcore/annoyingly into anything turns a lot of people off. well-roundness is the key.

I didn't get the homophobic thing was a major issue for the dude, that is a dividing point indeed. I mean, I have friends who don't approve of homosexuality but they aren't bigots and don't hate gays.

For someone to turn from noncaring to anti-gay is disturbing.

They don't believe the lifestyle is ordained by God (they're older people, in their 60s) or whatever. It's bullshit but they don't hate gays, don't talk negative about them, will invite them to dinner, hang out, etc.

From everything I gather, it's akin to people who don't believe in smoking weed. You don't have anything against those who do, just don't approve of the action. It sounds absolutely fucking retarded though now that I typed this out.

It's a personal belief, I can't get hung up on others' much unless it's discriminating. Hell, I don't care if people think the earth is flat and Joseph Smith himself impregnated Mary as long as they don't preach it or flaunt it to anyone else.

These people I'm talking about are old-school Church of Christ, I think they feel some sort of guilt there.

so casual racism and misogyny are ok too as long as there isn't literal discrimination?

you're trying to hard to accommodate people who should not be accommodated.

my point was that if their anti-gay thoughts are ok as long as they don't drag gay people behind their pickup trucks, would it be ok if they had anti-woman and anti-black people thoughts too?

You're right about accommodating. I don't see it as a jump like you, so to me it's not like your thinking. I truly don't think thoughts like those are anything remotely close to hate.

I can see an opposing viewpoint very easily. The more I think the more I see that viewpoint, too, actually.

Oppression (on any level... i realize that other groups have had / have it worse) is pretty close to hate. and if you don't see how religiously motivated passive homophobes contribute to the parts of anti-gay society that still exist, then you're not thinking about it hard enough.

It's not homophobia really though, as they aren't scared or frightened or aim to avert homosexuals. From what I gather they don't believe it's how God wants life interpreted, similar baptists and alcohol or a proportion of Catholics and birth control.

It's fucking retarded, you're right. I'm glad I don't think hard about this shit, it's depressing.

apparently it wont require any research so you should just write it.

ithink you should try to find a job that you enjoy. you're going to spend a huge chunk of your time on earth doing it so it might as well be something you feel good about. also you can do tons of other jobs with an english major, don't limit yourself to the typical ones. an english major is basically just a liberal arts education which provides a great background to any career, even if it is something that doesn't require a college degree in the first place.

i mean homophobia in the more colloquial sense, and that is exactly what it is (do we need to develop a new term or something?).

and please stop comparing it to smoking pot and using condoms and drinking. when 30 states (or however many it is) amend their constitutions to prohibit birth control then maybe we can have that talk.

you should think hard about it because acceptance of casual and passive religiously motivated bigotry thwarts progress. i'm not saying you need to get in their faces and argue with them, but i would go as far as saying that you shouldn't be friends with people like that. people always freak out when i say that but i've never really understood why.

if people aren't ever compelled to recognize that there are social costs associated with their bullshit belief about the genders of two consenting adults in a sexual relationship, then nothing will ever get better.

i'm totally with you and get exactly what you're saying.

people are going to believe what they believe and it almost never correlates exactly with anyone else's. but that doesnt give reason to treat them any less civil.

i have an old neighbor who has known me since pre-school. old republican lady probably- plays golf, super conservative, doesnt agree with my lifestyle and i'm almost positive she votes against my personal interests. but you know what? she still waves to me on her morning walks, stops to talk to me if she catches me on the way to my car and will not stop doing that until the day she dies. is her passive homophobia really hurting me? we have vastly different beliefs based on different upbringings, and different relationships with god. but we're still neighbors, were still human, and it's still nice to have her as a friend.

what good would it do for me to cut off these types of relationships because they are only 'accommodating' and not 'supporting'? it would make me just as extreme as the major fag haters.

but you know what? by being myself, being a good person, and not flaunting my lifestyle or differences in their faces allows them to see me as human and not a walking civil rights movement. sometimes this has more of an overall impact than parading around and demanding equality. you have to treat them as an equal if you expect the same treatment.

if you think someone who doesn't vote in favor of gay rights by default qualifies to be eliminated from your friend-list, then YOU'RE not thinking about it enough.

you don't have to be actively oppressing someone to be homophobic. It can be a component of your world view, religion, etc., and you can act on it and not consciously think you're a bigot.

If you are raised in a homophobic religion (like catholicism) and you go on to advocate their doctrine, you're practicing homophobia. even if you genuinely feel no ill will.

institutionalized bigotry like that is almost worse than outright bigotry, because it lets it's advocates off the hook. they can hide behind their religion, laws, culture, etc. and not have to face up to it.

but in the end you are not just what you feel, but what you do.

i get to pick my friends. and i have plenty of them. i don't need to be friends with people who vote against my personal interests and think i live in sin.

but, maintaining civility is important, and i do that, i promise. i'm casual acquaintances with a mormon and some batshit fundie from colorado springs from school, for example. one of them i see and talk to 4 days/week. but we're not friends and never will be. and i'm ok with that.

i mean my undergrad had more than its share of anti-gay catholics. i was always civil. am i friends with any of them? absolutely not.
