Cain is a joke. The fact that there are more overt racists in the red states is a side note. It's hard to talk about hidden racism on an individual level. You can talk about institutional oppression because it's concrete and has observable consequences but speculating on whether or not someone is subconsciously racist is not going to amount to anything. Although there probably are apolitical people who vote on impulse and choose the black guy so they can tell their friends at their wine drinking parties or whatever the fuck yuppies do that they voted for the black man. Just like there are people who are not gonna pick the black man because they were raised to believe that blacks are inherently stupid or violent or something racist like this. Again, no way to prove it or make claims about it because it boils down to what's going on inside an individual's brain

dude when i lived in louisiana it was common for people to say things like "I'm not racist, even black people tell me I'm not racist" "I have a black friend" etc

Meanwhile 99% of the black people in the town lived on one side of the railroad tracks while 99% of the white peeople were on the other side. I do think the "see he's black and even he agrees!" type people exist and are actually quite common. Just my opinion though...

i don't think liberals are holding obama to any standard other than a liberal one, which he's not meeting. but you have to see where herman cain is like a gold mine to racists.

and i don't mean racists as in people who literally want to lynch and kill black people or whatever. just the people who deny racism exists and think black people have all the opportunity necessary and that there is no institutionalized racism in this country. herman cain plays right into those hands.

Sure, but first off, I wasnt talking about anything Cain has said (as I pointed out above) and second it's still a jump to say those racist would then vote for him to prove a point. But ok, lets make that jump, honestly how big of a group would that be?

True he does, but (and maybe this is where our problem is coming from) I dont consider those people racist. I think that's white america, largely ignorant and detached from what it's like to be black. Not exactly their fault, they've never experienced it. I mean we sort of touched on this while arguing teapartiers, wasnt it like 60% or something like that of the general public, democrats and republicans, felt blacks were finally more or less on equal footing.
