I do. I think Inception is a genuinely great and thought provoking film that people for whatever reason have come to believe that it is cool to hate it. The writing is excellent (especially for a big Hollywood production), it's well directed, and it's just beautifully done. As someone that is very into Psychology, Freud and dreams I really gravitate towards it.

Also, I would say that Blue Velvet is David Lynch's 2nd best film.

Inception is worth seeing for the way it looks.

The rest is debatable but come on. It is a beautiful movie.

What is it that you don't like about it?
Usually when I dislike a film that much there is a pretty legitimate reason.

For example, I fucking despised Gran Torino and I think it is truly one of the worst films of this decade and should be next to shit piles like Tyler Perry's nonsense. I hate it because as much as I love Clint Eastwood, the writing is fucking atrocious, the acting is GARBAGE (especially by the fucking retarded asian cast) who actually seem like they may be retarded. Clint's character is a racist grumpy old man who is completely 1 dimensional. The whole goddamn thing is an abomination to my intelligence.

You've seen actual thought provoking movies right? I'm not talking about ITS A TWIST either or "OMG IS HE ACTUAL REAL OR DREMS?"

Such bullshit. I watched it once and I was like "this is confusing but everyone seems to enjoy it so I'll give it another chance." Second time I watched it my dad and I were both "this is unbelievably stupid when you get right down to it." So I was bonding with my dad over our mutual annoyance with this movie which is what cool dudes do.

I hate on shit because I hate it, don't ever get that confused.

This is a joke. An absolutely embarassing joke. 90% of the script is explaining what's in the script. That's a bad script. It's a rule. There's really no characterization it's just a bunch of BS that people think is super deep because it's about dreams and stuff, man.

Quote:
it's well directed,
Action scenes are muddy and confusing at best, set pieces are not nearly as lively and vibrant as I would expect dreams to be. Leonardo DiCaprio does his one note rage baby for the whole movie. I'll say that Marion Cotillard is wonderful given that she's playing a fucking abstracton. The movie manages to be a thriller that has absolutely no suspense, because nothing is really real and it just doesn't even matter when a pudgy fat guy can take out an entire platoon of snow goons by himself it's just...well South Park did it beautifully, they just burst in and start firing weapons all over the place to the point where it's not even exciting or interesting to see the action sequences you just want them to stop.

And the music, GOD. What does Hans Zimmer use for a baton? A sledgehammer? Jesus Shit.

It was cookie cutter Nolan, which is basically really slick modern hollywood "grown up movie" style where everyone is super cool and every setting is ultra modern. It's not really original or interesting beyond that. Michael Mann can blow his ass out of the water at the same game (Heat, Collateral even Miami Vice on a stylistic level).

holy shit we know already, i would have thought inception was akin to psychology what inglorious basterds is to history.

also if you're a shrink that's into dreams you're a quack and i want to kick you in the balls

well i already outlined my hatred of inglorious basterds and above is why i think inception is shitty

it's primarily that embarassing shitbag of a script. I love how in the 2nd dream sequence there's that whole zero grav action sequence for no real reason. Why because the car in the 1st level is falling off the bridge? What?

I donno why you think it's so thought provoking, this movie manages to spend two hours of seemingly endless dialogue to say absolutely nothing.

As much as I would like to get into a debate with you on all of this I just feel super lazy right now. We seemed to have pretty similar taste in films in the main Movies thread but we disagree on this one. I think stylistically Inception is shot very similarly to Mann's stuff (which I also really like) but the actual script is something that Mann would never come close to. Mann likes to regurgitate the same film every few years (srsly as much as I love Heat and Public Enemies they are the same goddamn thing). There is nothing like Inception. I don't understand why you are so averse to dreams and maybe that is one of the main problems right there? You said you don't really get it and that could also be the problem. IDK man.

Hmm after giving it a little bit more thought, Inception reminds me a little bit of The Matrix in that when both films first came out they were LOVED by mostly everyone and then (seemingly out of nowhere) there was all this weird backlash.

I've never seen or heard backlash for the original Matrix. It was and continues to be a modern classic, a monumental piece of filmmaking. Inception is nowhere close to the Matrix in terms of quality

also, any perceived backlash toward the matrix is probably due to the ubiquitous parodies and ripoffs, and then the sequels. sorry for triple post

I would argue that the 2nd Matrix was just as good as the 1st.

Inception fails to work for me in the same way that Nolan's Batman movies fail. This obsessive detail with plot mechanics without any sense of film craft or heart. Jim Emerson (he blogs on Ebert's website) has made some good points on the failings of these movies.

Although for the record I'm a big fan of Memento and I really enjoyed The Prestige. Blows The Illusionist out of the water.

what exactly is everyone's beef with matrix revolutions anyway? i mean, how were you expecting it to end, exactly?

sure it wasn't as original as the first two and felt more like they were just going through the motions and wrapping up the story because they had to, but what was so terrible? the cave dance? the floating baby head?

(ed- the only legitimate reason i can think of is that the filmmakers went for a cliche stoic victory ending and completely glossed over the fact that Zion and the "real" world was just another level of the matrix. if you remember, this was implied by the scene where neo stops some of the octopus robots in the tunnels.)

It was an awful ending given at how pretty much every fan made theory after the 2nd movie on how it would end was far better than the actual ending.

i don't ever really recall dreams and the ones i do are surreal, so this movie really does not feel like dreams for a single second

i will say that i'd rather watch inception than the matrix then that Stephen King tv movie with the killer cat people and that sherriff with the pet cat in his car all the time THEN inglorious basterds

inception has good talent in it. matrix has larry fishburne and Hugo Weaving. I think brad pitt is sliding at this point. Benjamin Button, Inglorious Basterds. Barfffff.

Benjamin Button

how's that movie's rep holding up?
