it's a dumbass comment dressed up as a serious thought experiment.
But I think in the context of the film it's easy to understand what he meant. In the baseball bat scene a Nazi commander, who prizes his bravery, who won't give up the location of another squadron, and who is respectful of his American opponents to a point, is brutally killed (murdered?) for, essentially, doing what any good soldier would do in his position. The film celebrates his death only because he is a Nazi.

*I resent having to do this but I've seen other threads discussing "white power", and to be clear I have no sympathy with Nazi idealogies.

every shot in it is perfect
really the only thing that is a drag is the mike myers scene
the way the tension builds in the opening scene, the pub scene, and when christoph waltz is eating with shoshanna
its just amazing

to think that means that it's ok for americans to torture and even murder suspected terrorists, when you get down to brass tacks

either stand for it or you don't

Only Reservoir Dogs is better. And I would actually say it's as good as Jackie Brown.

The Brad Pitt storyline is a nice contrast the Jewish girl's storyline. And as demented as the movie can be it never feels like a guilty pleasure. It's never as low brow as Kill Bill or Death Proof. There are a lot of heartfelt scenes and sympathetic characters.

i think what i have a problem with is the cruelty, more than death perse, because it is war against fascists. but the cartoonish pleasure behind it is disturbing and in no way different than the nazis

that's the core concept really it's not that nazis are people too

it's that americans are acting exactly like nazis

There are great moments in the first episode (It's hard to talk of tarantino movies in acts) but the getting to takes forever and there's nothing but BLABBER the entire time, it's not witty or interesting it's just BLABBER and the guy thinks he can still write a script. I think right when Brad Pitt says "I didn't come down here from the smokey mountains" I was like "Ok this dialogue is fucking horrendous," and the last few takes of Brad Pitt saying Nahzys in some space dialect never before heard on American soil, all I could think of was ham. Then there was Hitler and subtitles in front of a bugs bunny map and I was like holy fucking christ this is awful. And American v. Nazi execution scene with the 70s intros for the "hilarious" jew murder squad that ends with a vicious beating was just too much and I walked it.

maybe i don't like this guy anymore, maybe i need to rewatch pulp fiction and reservoir dogs and see if i don't need to take a hot shit on it.
Okay, I can understand what you mean. I guess all I can do is shrug and say that what didn't work for you works for me. As to the over-the-topness of some of the characters, this is Tarantino so I think he's not really presenting a true WWII film, but one about WWII movies. So the thing's filled with archetypes.

Also: no shame in enjoying Scott Pilgrim. I'm not into video games but I found it frickin hilarious.

Isn't that the point? That everybody's sick and sadistic, just one stands on the other side of an imaginary line?

You didn't watch the rest of the movie, so I'll go ahead and say, the entire movie is historical fiction. Very, very fiction. I don't think he was trying to say that Americans actually did shit like that, it's more of a "what if" situation.

i'm not either but i do like comics and this movie plays a lot with visuals and it really is carefree and does not give any kind of a fuck at all

i just don't like brutal comics with torture and fascists and people acting like fascists to get back at fascists and as far as being a movie about movies F- on that front, it's a movie about watching movies or what? whofuckingcares

now seriously when you guys were watching BLUE VELVET did you sit there thinking, jeffrey is basically a play on the director and by extension the movie audience and fans of mysteries? I certainly think so. The brutality is shocking, repulsive and offensive but at least it's intended to be, as a reflection of what kind of violent monster Frank truly is. The gas mask is a near comic touch to render the thing safely ridiculous instead of harrowingly real.

How does the movie show that he is respectful of his American opponents? I didn't get that impression.

It's been a while, but doesn't he "respectfully decline" their requests, and dignifiedly accept his own death for doing so? It's true he curses them out and reveals his antisemitism, but this is after the Americans' persistent irreverence. I think the movie makes a point of showing that he has a personal code of honor.

Did you make it to the Mike Myers scene? I'm surprised that hasn't come up yet.
