Default Wilco – The Whole Love

I was aware this was coming out sometime soon but it wasn't really on my radar. Even though I like Sky Blue Sky it's not as strong as most of the preceding albums, and self titled only had 3 or 4 songs I really enjoyed. I had kind of resigned Jeff Tweedy as another old, fading musician from the alternative age...

But last night I saw them at Merriweather in DC... holy shit, the new songs fucking rock. They played seven off the upcoming record (it comes out tomorrow) and I was floored. I think the album is streaming on NPR but I haven't listened yet... has anyone heard it? If these songs sound as good on CD as they did last night, I would say this has the potential to be the best Wilco album since Yankee Hotel.

I've been listening to it for the last two days. I would say it's their best album since A Ghost is Born (But doesn't top Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or A Ghost Is Born). It's a grower. Only a handful of the tracks are immediate, but the rest kinda grows on you. So possibly this might be as good as YHF, but time will tell! Much stronger than Wilco The Album (even though I love that album) and I hated Sky Blue Sky. I'd say it's juyst as good as Summerteeth.

It starts out FANTASTIC with "Art of Almost"... and you literally get the "Wtf, is this Wilco!?", like the first time you heard Kid A, you know? And the song grows to the most amazing climax they've put on record since Spiders (Kidsmoke). The single is next, "I Might" and it's one of the best tracks they've ever done, period. Love that 60s organ sound, and it's on a lot of the record.

Then the album starts to mellow out, which didn't excite me as much. This is the part that needs to grow on me I think.

The album suddenly picks up on track 8 with two amazing back to back songs, "Capitol City" and "Standing O", the former a jazzy number in the vein of "Hummingbird" and the later a rocker in the vein of "Kicking Television" (only better). Then it mellows out again. The last song bugs me because it's a 12-minute epic that doesn't have much dynamic change. But at the same time, it's still pretty good, and is a great song... reminds me a bit of "Kingdom of Rust" by Doves.

And because I'm such a nice guy. here you go, have the album.

thanks dog. yeah, they opened with Art of Almost and I nearly shat myself. First time seeing the band. I expected a bunch of old people sitting down through the whole show. There was one girl that kept shouting for people to sit (get real) but halfway thru the first number people were climbing all over the railing and standing on their seats and shit. Fucking crazy.

Haha that's great!

I'm actually a new Wilco fan... I ignored the hype of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot when it came out and wrote it off as hipster bullshit. (what a dummy, I know).

Fast forward to when I saw them perform "Wilco The Song" on the Colbert Show a few years ago, and it blew me away! So then my step-brother took me to see them in 2009, and they were really great. And I've been playing catch-up ever since. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I hear something new and beautiful everytime I listen to it. It is seriously one of the very best albums made in the last decade, and it quite brilliant.

Funny you should mention the show, because I didn't really know what to expect, I knew about their dadrock stereotype (of them or the audience--or both!?) but man there were so many college chicks at that show. So yeah, that's kinda not true.

yeah, exactly, I had heard that all their fans were old... nope, lots of young people going crazy, and best of all, the band fucking destroyed. every other song ended in a 5-10 minute jam.

Friend of mine burned me YHF in 2007 and it took me a pretty long time to get into it, but after that it just clicked. I loved the band unconditionally. Disappointed by self titled a bit... but yeah, I missed them a bunch of times. Glad I finally saw them and learned the truth.

so if you don't like this album you have no soul. so. fucking. good.

listen up netphoria, I know it isn't "cool" to like Wilco anymore because it's "dadrock" or whatever retardedly reductive label you brand it with, but you are all fuckers. This album is the motherfucking best. Album of the year, you heard it here first.

Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest is in tight competition with DBT's Go Go Boots for me

Yeah I love Circuital but I don't know if I think it is as good as Whole Love. Never really listened to Drive By Truckers, maybe now is a good time

haven't heard new Gillian Welch yet but the quality of her music has tapered off over the years. is this better than the last one?

wilco is a band whose best days are behind them but they're so subtle and folky that they can keep throwing out the same shit and people will continue to gobble it up

best record of the year so far is probably WU LYF but i generally wait until summer of the following year to really proclaim a #1. Last year it was SWANS and then Deerhunter & Kanye.

Planning on picking up the new album today - have only heard the single once or twice and dig it, so I'm curious.

Wilco live nowadays really is an awesome, awesome show. Nels on guitar is one of the most fun performers ever to watch, not just because of raw talent, but also because the dude's insane gyrations when he really gets into it. Just awesome.

Jeff is one of the few frontmen who's banter sincerely cracks me up sometimes. What a quirky, dry humor.

Glen, their drummer, is also quite a sight to see.

All in all - live Wilco in 2011 is one not to be missed.

that sucks, it was totally awesome.

@Trots, like I said, the new record took me off guard. Have you heard it? "Subtle and folky" does not really do it justice

I've had my fill of Wilco from Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Sky Blue Sky

YHF is a contemporary classic no doubt but they aren't my style.

I just got this last night and I love it. First half of the album is instantly accessible to me. Got the bonus disk for "I love my label" and dig that too.

listened to the new Gillian Welch today. It's definitely as good as anything else she has done, waiting for it to grow on me more before deciding if it is better than Revival. The Way it Goes and Tennessee are so good, I could listen to them all day

People need to stop smoking so much weed, get off the fucking internet a few minutes and realize this is completely talentless art-student garbage. If you like this music just buy a microphone, reverb pedal, a cheap casio keyboard, and a four track and just make it yourself. Then at least you don't have to spend any more money on other talentless people's records. Plus you'll be a more productive person. WOW!

i tried listening to this just now, got through about 5 songs
it sounds really good, they're good musicians, it just doesn't do anything for me.
awesome guitar solo on the first song though.
