New York Times – Murdoch Closing Tabloid Linked to British Hacking

According to another person familiar with the possible charges, e-mails recently turned over to the police from The News of the World linked Mr. Coulson and half a dozen other people, including high-ranking editors, to payments to the police “in the six figures...”

But public revulsion spilled over this week at new allegations — separate from those linked to Mr. Coulson — that the paper hacked into the phones of a 13-year-old murder victim, Milly Dowler, the families of slain soldiers and victims of the 2005 subway bombings.

This is naturally all over the news here in the UK and has caused outrage - the public are going apeshit over the hacking of dead soldier's families phones/police corruption and the exploitation of murder victims.

The News of the World which is 160 years old announced that they are to close for good on Sunday - but it's just a cynical move by Murdoch.

Yeah, all they're doing is changing the name so "The Sun" gets a Sunday release. What makes this even more interesting is that our dear prime minister is very matey with some of the main people involved...watch the bastard squirm.

Some utterly horrendous logic coming form McMullen - however I'm not familiar with what their rights to privacy are. If they had a written constitution, then maybe we could say his logic is that everybody has to follow the laws except journalists who can violate them by stepping on people's rights to privacy in order to make money.

He also uses a pretty sour rationalization for certain deeds, suggesting that running garbage after garbage of sensationalized nonsense will empower them to send the truth to more people when it finally comes along.

If this McMullen fellow could articulate his position better, I might not find myself disagreeing with him.
