Default Found a lost dog collar, no tags... now what do I do with it?

When we were coming home late on Fri. night we found a dog with a collar with a long tether attached in the median just meandering around. We stopped since she had a collar, but unfortunately she had no tags. She was super sweet and came right to us when we called to her and rolled over for a belly rub. I really have no idea what kind of dog she is, (maybe you can tell me) but she's pretty large (we have 2 pugs and 2 cats) so I don't think we can keep her, but she's just so sweet.

I don't know what to do with her. We've put up flyers all over the neighborhood, sent an email out to the neighborhood association's online group and listed her on the cl lost and found. I'm going to go Monday and see if she's microchipped (but being that she had a tether attached to her collar, I'm assuming she's not microchipped). I hate to turn her over to a shelter because I don't want her to get euthanized if no one comes to claim her.

What would you do? Here's a pic of her.

depends on your living arrangement. i was in a similar situation but had to give the dog to a shelter because i live in a studio apartment. but if i had a backyard or a bigger place i would've kept it until i found the owners

Besides unusual circumstances we've got going on now (foundation repair/ it's raining) we have a large backyard and keeping her back there is no big deal. Because of the above we've been alternating between inside a guest bathroom/roaming around the house/garage. She doesn't seem to mind our cats or pugs, but the cats are afraid of her.

I'm concerned because she was tied up with a tether her owners might not come for her/care she got loose. She's seems to really like us, follows us from room to room, laying her head on our legs, wagging her tail. We tried playing with her but she doesn't seem to know how.

I don't know what we're going to do.

tough call. But hold off on the shelter for as long as possible. Working in the medical lab in one for a year, I've seen the pain these animals go through. Ask friends/family if the owners can't be found.

Yes, definitely use the shelter only as a last resort. Good luck, it's really just a matter of waiting and finding her a home.

Here's a pic of her hanging out on our pug's couch. Actually she just got up to follow Zach to the other room. She's so sweet. I wish she wasn't such a big dog, I'd want to keep her in a heartbeat.

so pet finder is a pretty easy way to find no kill breed specific shelters in your area. my girlfriend who works in rescue says this looks like a pit bull/hound mix of some sort.

anyway, here is the direct link to such a search for pit bulls in the dfw area:

http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?...tsearch=Search

i would systematically try to contact all the organizations who have pibbles in your area to see if they are open to taking in a rescue.

also there may be local laws pertaining to how long you must keep the dog and wait for a response from the owner before relinquishing ownership to a shelter or whatever. animal control is probably the best place to call for this information.

Did you check to see if it's got a chip installed in it?

Really, though - lots of animals nowadays are "chipped" with these gps style locator deals. The pound does it around here, and it's cheap... so I think more animals than you'd think have them in there.

No microchip and no one ever claimed her after 5 days. I wound up taking her to the Humane Society, and they said they'd put her up for adoption.
