Well, currently I facilitate group therapy 2x a day (usually anger management, substance abuse or mental health type groups). My personal favorite group to do is a dream therapy group. I also see 2 clients regularly for weekly individual therapy.

Anyway, last week I had a client in one of my anger management groups that is about to reach 90 days clean... She shared with the group how much she loves to fight and how she recently wanted to get into a fist fight with her sister because of something her sister had said about her HIV status. I did a little role play with her and we looked at what it would feel like to beat up her sister AND how beating her up might help help her feel better momentarily. We then talked about how anger dulls pain momentarily in a similar way that drug use does. Long story short, she was able to come away from the group seeing the similarities between aggressive behavior and substance abuse. She was able to see that they were both short term fixes that might make her feel better in the moment, but that in the long run they don't really solve the issue at hand or make the hurtful feelings go away. She was also able to see how both of those actions may have very similar consequences. Pretty cool.

I don't give people advice. I just help people look at their thought processes and help them find unhealthy patterns in their behavior. It's a collaborate effort though and shit does not solve itself over night.

Hnibos wanted to know more about it.

I mean obviously individual therapy gets a lot more in depth but that was just an example of how group therapy can work.

The group is seen as a social microcosm and over time client's defenses really do come to the surface.

It's interesting to see.
