I agree, but I think most of us bashing The Strokes as a choice were doing just that. For me it has nothing to do with the time factor. They just suck.
Elizabeth will be so upset...

It's just boring, to me. Apart from Sloop John B, of course.
i think pet sounds is pretty much as near perfect as an album could be. it'd sail into my all-time top5 list.

sloop john b is my least fave song too

on another note, the entire NME top 100 was garbage. it pains me that their writers get paid for their opinions.

marshall mathers > sgt peppers?
andrew wk > abbey road?
dusty springfield > electric ladyland? etc etc

Why? What makes you like it so much? I've read many people's opinions on it and most of them just say how it changed music. I know REMs later stuff is influenced by PS quite a bit. But when I listen to it... it just doesn't do much of anything for me except make me want to put something else on.

And I think my love for Sloop John B stems from the Forrest Gump soundtrack. That, and the line "and he ate up all of my corn" makes me laugh.

to be honest, whether or not the album proved to be influential doesn't interest me.

why i love Pet sounds:
* it has some absolutely brilliant melodies on there (esply God Only Knows, Caroline No, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times). i have to admit, i'm a sucker for a beautiful tune...it's the first thing i look for in a song. it's also why i rate macca over lennon
* the lyrics are simple yet extremely well-written - i'd take them over metaphors that could mean anything/nothing.
* the singing/harmonisations are executed well and more than anything are sincere. i genuinely get the impression Brian Wilson was writing about personal events in his life on this album and that comes thru in his singing.
*there's a recurring theme about growing-up/moving-on and all the insecurities that naturally come with that change. (one reason why i don't like Sloop John B...it doesn't seem to fit) i like albums that have a meaning or some kind of coherent mood to them. probably a reason i don't like greatest hits albums...they're generally just a bunch of songs thrown together.
* it's the closest the beach boys came to releasing a beatles record - and that's praise indeed in my book
