regarding the high speed rail...

governor sick rot is planning to turn down funding for the proposed high speed rail project between orlando and tampa. i can't say i entirely disagree with him. both cities are virtually impossible to get around in if you don't have a car. to speak anecdotally, i have a friend in tampa who had to get by without a car for a couple days. her job was across the bay, like 7 or 8 miles as the crow flies. there was no way to get to that side of town without transferring bus lines at least 7 times and it would take no shorter than 15 hours.

whoever said we feitshized the automobile is completely right. when cars become way too expensive to operate, there will be massive demand for hyperurbanization. and developers will be trailing behind demand for at least a decade.

china has our asses preemptively whooped in this regard. i do believe they are experiencing something like a 40% vacancy rate in their newly manufactured high rises. they're prepared for this coming wave of people towards urban centers. the US's foreclosure rate is 7 times the homeless population. but this does us no good, since most of these properties are in the suburbs with minimal access to public transport.

i really want gas to go to like 15 dollars a gallon tomorrow so we can get this over with.

I can't believe what a simpleton you are. We haven't had a free market in the US since the 1930s.

Nimrod,

Joseph Stalin called academics that enthusiatically endorsed communism "Useful Idiots".

free market does not equal free market values. Does it make you feel good to purposely act like such a fucking moron? I hope it fills that hole inside you.

Actually, Nimrod's point was pretty obvious and I suppose he is now wondering, like I am, how exactly free market principles will "murder" the United States, especially as it does not have a free market.

But that's cool. Anyone who doesn't instantly grasp the intended meaning of vague posts must be a moron.

Also, you do live in a democracy - it is just a corrupt one. But this is beside the point, and I'd rather not let you derail this conversation as you so often do.

no, we do not live in a pure democracy, just as we don't have a purely free market. seriously, you aren't like teaching me a lesson or something by acting like you are incapable of understanding anything

Oh sorry. In that earlier post where you said we don't live in a democracy, I guess I was supposed to read that as "we don't live in a pure democracy."

Does it annoy you that people don't automatically understand the trademark redbreegull way of using words and forming arguments? The meaning is in there somewhere, but you have to be a radical left wing genius to tease them out.

i dunno dude, you don't think continued evolution to a free market will destroy the concept of a nation state?

Nah. That will just destroy the third world countries that the first world imposes the free market on.

I think what will destroy the nation state will be the continued corporatization of the global economy which does not necessarily need a free market. In fact, a free market would probably inhibit the growth of particularly big corporations, who rely pretty heavily on government.

so you buy that idea then ok. i don't really see that as being any hinderance to corps but yeah i guess the big ones would just flame out and other people would pick up the pieces.

It isn't a hindrance so much, but the most successful / powerful corporate entities rely on government support - be it financial assistance, tariffs on imports that might threaten profit, illegal wars to gain resources, the destruction of organised labour etc.

On a somewhat related and interesting note, always worth reading about this guy (who I am sure you are familiar with Trots)

correct.

The worst case scenario for America is to become like Saudi Arabia in this sense: the royal's have all the money through oil and live like kings while 99.99% of the people live in sqaulor. There's really no need for that government and the oil companies to rely on a vibrant economy with a nice balance of exports to imports. The rulers simply don't need it or care enough for their own people to have it.

We're not at that point yet, but the current course is headed in that direction.
