It's really creepy when people make their young children facebook pages. Way to encourage admirable behavior, Mom! Whore me out form the start!

I have a friend who made a Facebook page for her newborn, and updates it with stuff like:

"Spent time with grandma in walmart helping her and mommy shop. Trying to pull everything i could reach into the buggy. I weigh 19 lbs now too! I'm getting so big!"

"Splish splash in the bathtub! I love laying in the bottom of the tub and soaking my mommy "

It's pretty fucking obnoxious.

Yeah, I have a friend or two that made Facebook pages for their kids who are like two or three years old or whatever. I guess that's what passes as parenting these days.

As for if FB weirds me out...I think what it has evolved into is alternatingly creepy and oxymoronic, depending on how one uses it. People often treat FB as if it were always intended to be a personal online campus dorm room for their respective circle of friends and themselves, whereas the reality is it was originally conceived with the opposite intention in mind. Nowadays FB is less about networking people and more about networking things like interests or whatever, and it's becoming harder and harder to use it as an online directory for people to network with others because more and more people just completely shut their pages off to people they don't know well. In short, it's basically MySpace 2.0 now.

Initially it was supposed to be a way for friends in college to communicate with each other. So not sure what you're getting at here. Its expansion into availability for everyone and having to opt out of having your profile viewed by people you don't know is what seemed antithetical to how it got its start.

it's supposed to be a data mining site that coaxes users into customizing a profile that can then be used to market personalized ads

this guy like the smashing pumpkins and is single so the ads are buy a russian bride (picture of denise milani) and TEARGARDEN BOX SET neither thing i'm interested in

i mean a russian bride is cool, and so is denise milani but I don't think I'm getting her in the mail.

The first part is correct but incomplete. It was meant for friends in college to communicate with each other as well as for potentially expand one's social circle via networking and shared interests or whatever else; thus it wasn't necessarily just meant to be an e-dorm for college students and their little circles, though that was certainly part of the equation. Now it's evolved (devolved?) into a combination of what Trots and myself were talking about: MySpace 2.0/a personal data mining site for advertisers. FBs ads kinda remind me of those talking ads in the movie Minority Report. Creeeeeeeepy.

well at least the ads are done with some restraint unlike the myspace ones that were ugly and animated.

The only thing I really don't like abt fbk is the visibilty of comments on your page....they say it's only visible if the viewer can access the wall of the post which i think is bull shit...

It's not, there are privacy settings that you need to tailor. Default sets it to friends of friends can see your posts if your friend posts in it, which is creepy and weird.

By the way, why are the kiddos like 28if and ilikeplanets blaming facebook for all of these social ills when in reality most of us have been using social media on the internet for at least a decade back when everyone thought the internet was entirely filled with friendless basement dwellers and child rapists. I really don't see what Facebook did but combine file sharing, mbs and chat into one easy to use interface and move social networking on the internet to the mainstream.

Basically all I'm saying is that if you think Facebook is changing the way we communicate for the worse then you probably should stop using all forms of social media.

But anyway, I can't trust/force fbk friends to set those up properly thus making semi-private comments visable.

that's one of the weird things about facebook specifically. some others ******* the fact that it has personal contact information for millions and the fact that Mark Zuckerberg seems to think that everyone should share everything with everyone all the time.

NO ONE MAN SHOULD HAVE AWL THAT POWAH

why i dare say it's one of the longstanding issues that capitalism and democracy have failed to rectify. We liberated the capital upon upending the traditional avenue of richness (being born to some family or another that had money to begin with) but we've rebuilt the same structures. Capitalist wankers like to pretend everyone has a fair shot but anyone who's actually honest and not stupid know this is not true at all. Yes there is lateral movement from the bottom to the top, which was not the case in the days of Monarchy but it is still not equitable and money stays with families to this day, especially since the GOP decided that the "death tax" was worse than the holocaust.

Zuckerberg for example is white, from a rich family and he went to Harvard. He was already placed into a situation in which he could succeed. If a guy who didn't go to college had the exact same idea at the exact same time as Zucky did (which is pretty much a given) couldn't do anything about it because he was born poor and works as a garbage man. But the jcspunimrodists say that's the way it should work, because that man is lazy and stupid. Sweet. Pax Currency. Money makes right.

Facebook does sort of weird me out, which is why I do not have one. Being introverted and sort of private, I tend to come across as boring online anyway. It does get kind of annoying when people tell me they posted some really funny pic on Facebook and everybody has seen it but me. Or, they have these discussions about work and I feel somewhat out of the loop. I suppose as long as you are really careful and think twice about who you want to be "friends" with (you know, actual friends and acquaintances as opposed to like a friend of a friend of a friend who you met once) then you should be OK. I just do not want to get sucked into it is all.

That being said, the wiffleball tournament I want to register for you have to have a Facebook account for league updates. Sort of annoying but I really want to register for it.
