Do I want to go to a high school boy's graduation party in Nebraska I haven't heard about?
I think deep down this is a question of lifestyle. There must not be much diversity in the life of a banker. I dunno about grad parties but here's a good example: A good friend of mine from Indiana (about 3 hours away) moved to California for 5 years. When he moved back to Indiana (which I found out about via FB) he had an art opening for his new work. I probably would not have found out about that show through word of mouth. His new work was amazing and we re-connected in a sense and are close friends again.

I'm not at all arguing about levels of friendship. I'm talking about events that I may not have heard about or have forgotten about. Whether or not I enjoy them alone or with friends or crappy friends or fake friends is not what I'm talking about at all. I really don't need the support of company to pursue my interests in the arts.

it's nice that you can not only target specific people with invites, but gauge the events numbers based on their response / interest. It's already a social hub so the thought of a migration over to something else again, or using a specific service just to market events, is tedious. I can just quietly infiltrate peoples current social circles and plans anyway. if I do it right, then the public aspect of confirming themselves for my event will make them look cool.

there are other things, but at the moment, this is the one that works best for what I am looking for I guess.
It's rad cause I can get about 8000 city relevant invites to an event in a few hours through a little established network I have.

Anyway, one guy called 'Elvis Blue' or something who either won one year or was a finalist, was performing at the same local festival as my boss was playing, who is in one of SA's bigger 'rock' bands (they're like QOTSA, they're toured europe a few times). Anyway, so some guys bet him he wouldn't fuck with this Elvis Blue guys set, and he was so wasted, so he walked up while the guy was performing and puked all over his equipment, intentionally.
It has made quite a scene, apparently.
It's kinda out of character for him, he's mostly a soft spoken nice guy.
I was amused, and found out the scoop thanks to facebook.
"hey man how was your weekend?"

no one really answers that question anymore because they've written about it on facebook BEFORE ANYONE HAS ASKED!!!

just this week i also got back in touch with a guy i know who lives in Amsterdam, and had lost touch with him years ago.
He asked me if i was married yet and I realised this was a realistic expectation and felt weird.
Anyway, he's back here in November or something so we're going to meet up again and thats cool.

If I only relied on word-of-mouth through my close circle of friends I would find myself doing the same things week in and week out most likely. What duovamp is arguing against (to me) is the same as arguing against going to any website for information or picking up a flyer for any information or reading an email etc

You can get party invites without Facebook. Easily.
The advent of Facebook is the first time I've ever been invited to parties. Thank goodness for "send to all".

"I just use it to get girl/boyfriends."
You can "hook up" or find a mate quite easily without Facebook. Everyone can.
I can't do either and fuck you it's not easy at all.

You should evaluate whether or not this is a good decision.
I don't do this.

i dunno how much it's changed communication really tbh, other than introducing the phrase "Oh yeah I saw you post that on facebook" to our lexicon

I've had a facebook account for like 4 years, never sent anyone a message. I've pretty much only checked it when I was unsure when some event was. I have trouble understanding how anyone could have enough stuff going on in their life to need to spend hours on there. But then again, anyone having more than a handful of close friends is mind-boggling to me as well.
