Yeah, I need to calm down. Sorry about that. Sports is a silly thing to get upset about, and trolling is too, especially after I've been guilty of doing exactly the same thing to people (and in a much more pathetic manner) in the past.

Spurs are the greatest team in the history of all of sports. When they win the championship, the Rapture will start because no one will ever be able to be as good as them again in any capacity.

GO SPURS

Bill Simmons irritates me at times with his blatant homerism and lame pop-culture references, and I know his hatred of the Pistons is a bit over-the-top at times, but I think he hit the nail on the head here:

Quote:
Name me a bigger hit-or-miss general manager than Joe Dumars. He's like the Warren Beatty of NBA GMs -- either he delivers a hit or bankrupts your studio, with no in-between.

Mega-Hits: Trading Jerry Stackhouse for Rip Hamilton; getting Ben Wallace as compensation for Grant Hill's Orlando signing that would have happened anyway; orchestrating the Rasheed Wallace trade; stealing Chauncey Billups in free agency; drafting Greg Monroe.

Mega-Misses: Blowing the Darko pick (which should really count three times); giving an aging Hamilton a cap-crippling extension for reasons that remain unclear; turning Billups and Antonio McDyess into four months of a past-his-prime Allen Iverson, then $95 million of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva; giving away Arron Afflalo (and his dirt-cheap contract) that same summer for a future second-round pick to clear salary because he just spent $95 million on Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva.
And I also agree with his sentiment that LeBron should have signed with the LA Clippers. Him alongside Blake Griffin would have been AWESOME.

The Cancer Patient (as Rage Kage apparently likes to call him) is unfortunately still around raking in the cash while sucking big-time for Detroit.

Dumars needs to go. He caught lightning in a bottle for a few years, but let's face it; it's becoming more and more clear that he may have just stumbled ass-backwards into being successful in the early part of this decade. Once the team got old, he had no young building blocks to replace them with, which makes his choice to draft Darko just seem progressively worse every time you think about it. Dumping Billups a few years back would have made more sense had he been able to turn him into something other than a washed-up A.I., and then overspending on Rip, Gordon and Villanueva.

It'll probably be a few more years before the Pistons are a good team again.

I totally agree, guys stumble into success sometimes.

It's funny how the Spurs and the Pistons were about the same respective ages in the mid 00's and look who is still successful because our bench is off the motherfucking chain. I mean we reloaded like bandits, the Spurs have been able to dominate the last part of the draft for at least a decade now.

Of course Manu/Parker/Duncan was always a better core than what the Pistons strung together. I mean you had one tim duncan for Wallace+Wallace.

Ah, Eli Manning.

Popovich is a helluva coach, too, which helps. And yeah, Hill, Neal, Blair, etc. have been huge this season for SA off the bench. I do hope that McDyess can get a ring with the Spurs before he hangs 'em up.

Although I'm not going to disagree with the Spurs being a better team than the Pistons this past decade, I still think the Pistons could have beaten them in the 2005 Finals had Rasheed Wallace not suffered a massive brain fart and left a red-hot Bob Horry wide open for a game-winning three in the final seconds of Game 5. Pistons win that game, they go into Game 6 with a 3-2 series lead and likely close them out. But hey, who knows?

Phil Jackson is very slatin-esque in that photo. Luc Longley looks like he's taking a dump. Rodman looks like he knows Longely is taking a dump. Steve Kerr looks like a short bus rider.

i was thinking about the lineups

R. Wallace/Duncan - Duncan obviously but Sheed could step out onto the three point arc and nail one every now and again. I think Sheed's more fun to watch but obvs not as good as Timmeh. Not by a whole lot though, Sheed has always been one of my favorites. I like crazy people who get Techs (I luv u ron), means they care they just need discipline.
B. Wallace/Rasho? - Rasho was only a starter to get the tip. That guy was fucking awful. As I recall the lions share of minutes were between Big Shot Bob and Malik Rose (who's like a local legend) but obvs. Ben Wallace is better than both of them defensively, and Malik didn't have much an edge on him offensively. Rasho is one of the worst players ever to wear a Spurs uniform.
Prince/Bowen - Pistons are actually better here because I think Prince is a better defender and obviously better offense.
Rip/Manu - I call this one a push. Rip's streaky but not as awkward as Manu but we're talking about scoring sparkplugs that can fire a team up like nobody else? Well these two guys are nearly identical in that regard. Manu's taller and more of a presence defensively because of it.
Parker/Chauncey - Another push, Chauncey's a better floor general but Parker is faster and a better pure scorer. Inversely Chauncey's bigger than Parker so he has more of an impact against bigger players defensively but I recall Tony ran circles around him. He tends to do that against most people, but he's still not as pure a point as Chauncey.

I'd take a healthy Manu over Rip any day. Manu's biggest problem is the fact that he's a walking infirmary. The rest of what you said I agree with.

Manu's a bit of a mess on occasion and yeah he does get hurt but he's pretty much better, I think you're right. Less of a push than I imagined.

Man Rasho fucking sucked. I was talking shit about him last night. What drove me NUTS about him is that he was 7-3 or something and he was always looking down and looking apologetic. That's not how you play the big man. When other guys see that they start picking on you, driving on you, throwing alley oops over their heads n shit.

At least it wasn't Michael Olawakandi or Charlie Villanueva.

Duncan in his prime was one of the two or three best players in the league, if not the best. Sheed could have been on his level but chose to coast for the majority of his career. Unlike Sheed, Duncan almost always brought his A-game.

Both the Pistons and the Spurs were well-balanced, but Duncan's presence is what gives them the edge in this comparison.
