I'm willing to bet most of us have only heard Can, Faust, Neu!, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk at most.

calling kraftwerk krautrock seems weird to me though. it's kind of like calling smashing pumpkins grunge

"Krautrock" was just the British musical press label for the German experimental music scene.

voted for ash ra. overall discography (and solo offshoots) is more consistent than tangerine dream (who put out a lot of crap in their later years) so that would have been my second choice. i haven't listened to as much popol vuh as i should.

Klaus Schulze has released entirely too much material.

From that list I have to pick Can, but when Amon Duul are on they're fuckin on, and if Ash Ra Tempel would have quit after their first 3 albums or so I think I'd have to pick them.

Faust I've never been able to get into, turned off by the silly stuff I guess. Neu and Kraftwerk are neat, tangerine dream are ok, but I consider them pretty different from the more guitar based krautrock.
