What do you think of Songs for a Sailor?
So the EP is out now, in it's full glory(?). Any thoughts? Is it cohesive? Does it change your opinion on any of the songs individually?
Myself, I don't think it necessarily flows that great, but I think the songs' styles complement each other well. I think if it was Billy's intention to make something that has a distinctive feel (and when isn't it?) I think he succeeded. It's lyrically strong, in my opinion, but at least it's consistent there. I've been seeing the term psychedelic thrown around, especially with regard to Astral Plane. But so I was thinking, psychedelic EP, hey that makes me think of Lull! So I took a listen to remind myself and compare. I'm reminded that Billy could write lyrically deficient songs twenty years ago too, (yeah i'm looking at you Bye June). The rest of Lull, though, I think safely outperforms Songs for a Sailor. And it's certainly more psychedelic, whatever that means. |

I think maybe we should just listen to this instead:

i enjoy the music and the vibe. I wish Billy's vocals would stop getting so produced. His voice is unique and naturally interesting.

I'm torn between "eclectic" and "uneven" when taken as a whole. It's hard to call the first 4 tracks of 44 a "whole" though, even though it's been packaged as such.

listening to them as a batch i do, despite myself, think that it is a little tighter (music-wise). This San Francisco psychadelic 60's influence is very obvious and i think that for an EP worth of material it is cool.
I *sort* of understand the logic of releasing a track at a time (digital age of info, satiate fans and avoid leaks by trickling media at a fairly prolific rate of an album a year) but it is a disservice to the material. Good on billy for trying something new but the lesson learned i think is to release an EP every 4 months instead, whether or not they are compiled as one full album (i can't imagine how duct-taped together the final product is going to seem in 4 friggin years) |
