Default teargarden is a scam

So I just thought of this. The last interview we heard was that Billy was going to release 1 song at a time once per month. OK. So he needs to record 12 songs per year.

I think the general idea around the boards was something to the effect of... sweet, we will get songs pretty much as they are written, or shortly after. At least that is what Billy is leading us to believe.

I call bullshit. Think about it, the first 4 songs were recorded in what, sept - oct? we won't be getting the last of the first 4 until February/March. 6 months later.

The songs he is recording now? Well we know he wants to tour, so no recording in the spring (summer?). How many songs is he going to record? He needs to have songs already recorded/mastered for release if he is going to follow his schedule of 1 song per month. If the tour lasts several months (which I have no doubt it will be) Billy will probably be planning ahead and record quite a few songs during the current sessions. It is possible that the releases we hear next sept/oct/nov will actually be recorded during these sessions, almost a year earlier.

How is this any different than recording an album the conventional way, and just releasing it 1 track at a time? It isn't. There is nothing 'new' going on here. At least, not with a 1 track per month release rate.

TLDR; the whole getting insta feedback from fans on new songs is probably BS as we won't hear many of the songs recorded for 6 - 12 months. What he should do is release his EPs as they get finished. Who cares if there is a 3 - 4 month break in between them, at least he will get meaningful feedback on what that particular recording session produced.

Scams take your money. This does not. Unless you buy the LPs. But, if you shell out for those, you deserve to have Billy take your precious cash.

To receive full credit on this assignment you must provide a full definition of the word, not merely reference its verb form.

Ya, this is how I feel too. I'm not really concerned with the audience input and stuff.... I want to hear Billy's art, not the fans'... and personally, I just don't really enjoy listening to single tracks nearly as much as albums/e.p.s... I really like the idea of a multiple e.p. body of work that's ever evolving, but all interconnected. I just want to hear it one e.p. at a time rather than one track at a time.

it's not a scam yo, but you are taking contention with the release schedule which a agree with.

i really wish he'd rethink how he's doing this. i'd rather get about 3-5 songs at once and then a have months-long wait between releases, as if we were getting a series of EPs. song for a son, as good as it is, feels so weird as a standalone song

i really just don't dig this way of releasing music, i like to have some semblence of a "package" all at once. but at the end of the day it's free music, it's (hopefully) going to be one of the better SP albums, and there will be a lot of it. so i'm okay with it either way at the end of the day.

It's not really groundbreaking though...its groundbreaking in the sense that it will be the longest album to release ever if he's doing one every month or so.

what I was more reacting to was billy's statements/interviews where he was basically saying that he was making music in this way to get music out while it was in the moment, that type of reasoning. and the fact that the reasoning doesn't really gel with the reality.

Eh, a song released at a max of 4 months after it's been recorded is fairly "in the moment". How long are the songs totally final before they get to a CD and your ears from conventional record label release? Half a year?

It is a pretty big bummer to get this one song at a time.

I want an album, not a collection of singles.

I guess you didn't read my original post, at 1 song per month, the last of the songs he is recording today, december 2009, won't see the light of day until at the very earliest 8 - 12 months from now depending on how many songs he records. `12 months later is hardly in the moment.

He's not recording anything today. He's recording them in 4 song chunks which are then released, max, 4 months after they were recorded. that's the whole point of the staggered release, so he can work on the songs individually to make each one extra super special. If they were in the studio, we'd be inundated with tweets and blogs and pics of beard Billy, etc. etc.

It stays "in the moment" because of the 4-songs-to-an-LP system. It goes "4 songs, 4 months, 4 new songs, 4 more months, etc." there may be an overlap here or there but probably not.

I guess you have not been following what is going on, they are on their 2nd or 3rd song since they have been recording the last week+ including one song with strings... just follow kerry's twitter.

I refuse to follow anyone's twitter ever. I check EZTV (eztv_it) on Twitter once in awhile when their site is down and that's pretty much it.

He writes and records when it is most organic. I'm down with that. Don't force anythang, just let it flow. Let it flow.

i didn't critique or pick apart his art in this thread at all, i only called BS on his stated rationale for releasing songs in the manner he is releasing them. I also am not asking that Billy force anything either. I just don't like the 1 song per month thing, I guess in theory I could just wait 4 months and download all the songs that have been released the prior 4 months at one time, but I don't think I have the willpower not to listen to music as it is released =/
