Thinking that someone should die for killing someone else is a purely emotional response. There is very little evidence to support the death penalty as a significant deterrent to further crime. It just doesn't make sense.

Yep, deterrence is everything. That's why stupidly harsh prison sentences have completely eliminated marijuana use in this country, right?

Regardless, punishment shouldn't always have to be a teaching tool. What's really so wrong about saying "You fucked up, and so now we're going to fuck you up so bad that you'll never do it again."?

If she's measuring me up by what kind of christian I am, then yeah, I imagine she would be...considering I'm not any kind of one. Christianity interferes with my natural republican instincts of warmongering and lack of compassion for the less fortunate and criminals.

well that's what prisons are for. the point is that deterrence would be the only argument that would make any kind of sense. but it's not a deterrent, so what's the fucking point?

let's examine the pros and cons of executing a jihadi

pros:
jihadi no longer exists

cons:
jihadi will never live to see the error of his ways

I hope you conservatives realize that your beliefs are the result of ignorance and an unrealistic fear-driven quest for cultural stasis when the truth is that the most sure thing in the universe is flux. Just let go. Tomorrow is a different day.

We're casting the person out of society for good whether they're executed or just locked away for life. What does it matter whether or not it deters others? Why are we okay with life in prison not being a deterrent, but somehow deterrence is the only way to justify the death penalty? Just seems inconsistent to me.

I don't think Eulogy was saying the sole purpose of any punishment is deterrence. He was responding to death penalty supporters citing deterrence as a reason to keep the death penalty.

Oh, well in that case I agree. I never did like the deterrence argument. But conversely, I don't see the lack of deterrence as a strike against the death penalty.
