i think all of gossamer's criticisms are incorrect but i also don't think you can focus on the fiction aspect and ignore the science part. science fiction movies need to have some kind of rationale otherwise they don't work. you aren't supposed to suspend your belief totally. again, this is not to say that gossamer's points are valid in terms of being implausible.

there were a handful of people here who were up in arms that kirk just happened to land on the planet where spock was within walking distance. i wonder what those netphorians think of this

The alien weapons were cool and all, but it wasn't like human weapons were ineffective against the aliens or their technology. The badass alien guns didn't make them invincible warriors to the point that'd it'd be feasible for them to mount a revolt while severely outnumbered in hostile territory. 7 billion versus a million is not good odds. What would have stopped the humans from blowing District 9 off the face of the planet if the aliens had showed signs of rising up?

Another thing, if he collected just enough to power up the dropship, how is he all of a sudden also able to power up the mothership with that same amount of fuel WHICH btw was in the dropship the entire time.

Actually, I do think they could have explained this a little better. I never quite caught the exact reason the mothership even came to Earth, or why it couldn't leave. But I assume the dropship was the thing that controlled the whole ship's navigation and control, and it was the only thing that really needed power. The ship itself was obviously fine on power the whole time (what do you think was holding it up, magic?).

And I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that the fuel was in the dropship the whole time. The aliens had been gathering that fuel from scraps of their technology strewn about.

This movie was not good and there were quite a few head scratching moves, like for example WHY on earth would Wikus knock Christopher out when a. Wikus has no idea how to fly the dropship, b. even if he flies it and gets to the mothership how is he going to reverse the prawn process when he has no idea what equipment is even on the ship.

Because it was obvious that Christopher didn't think helping him was a priority. He obviously figured that he'd be better off taking his chances trying to figure out how to fix himself rather than waiting 3 years and hoping that the alien would hold up to his word. It was a simple desperation.

Really, you have maybe one or two minor points in your criticisms, but your major gripes hold no water at all and all but reveal that you missed or ignored major plot points. And saying this was a terrible movie just seems (once again) like you're trying to be contrarian for the sake of it and show how sophisticated your taste is by shitting on a movie that most other people like. District 9 wasn't great. It wasn't without it's flaws, but it was good, if not a little dumb, sci-fi...and was miles above the crap we've gotten most of this summer.

You're telling me that they're just going to sit tight and do nothing for 20 years even though they have obviously better technology?

That's pretty much one of the biggest points in the plot.

And not to mention, you yourself, admit that the whole mothership/dropship thing was poorly explained and confusing so I believe I have a lot more than just one or two minor points in my criticisms.

That's pretty much one of the biggest points in the plot.

I just don't see how you have to check your brain at the door to realize that the aliens were in a bad position, and their technology was not enough to even the odds. Out of a million aliens, how big of an army can they be expected to raise? Considering that they were presented as being human-like in their social dynamic (aside from the hive mentality), it's not like every last one of them would take up arms. Some would fight, some wouldn't. And even if they all did fight, they'd still be outnumbered several times over by all the human armies of the world, who certainly wouldn't stand idly by while alien invaders unleashed death and destruction on their brethren. Nothing we saw in the movie as far as alien technology goes seemed to me to be any great equalizer for the aliens against massive air strikes.

And also keep in mind, another big plot point early on was the fact that the human authorities were on constant lookout for weapon caches hidden by the aliens. The threat of revolt was there, but it clearly was being controlled to great extent.
