Dr. Benway, it's kind of ironic that you call me "that kind of person." Despite defending public health care, you come across as right wing. In your eagerness to accuse me of discriminating against the poor, you forget we don't live in a social vacuum. You forget that no man is "self-made." I don't claim the poor are incapable of learning English. My point is that there are no social conditions for the vast majority of them to learn.

Seriously, if we follow your assertions to their utmost consequences, we'll get something this: "most poor people don't learn how to speak English because they don't try hard enough." Or maybe even this: "most poor people are poor because they are lazy." After all, if you were able to learn English all by yourself, what is stopping the rest from doing the same?

You know, I learned English on my own too. I didn't have to spend a dime. But I still admit that I'm indebted to the environment I lived in. I see no such awareness in your posts. You seem to think that everything you've got is the fruit of your own labor. Quite honestly, you sound like a white woman who refuses to acknowledge her race privilege, or a man who denies that his gender brings him benefits. I'm not saying you should feel guilty for the privileges you do have, but please, don't try to erase those who are under you on the social ladder.

I googled "red light district" to see what place you were talking about. Do you mean you used to live in Bairro da Luz? If so, that's actually one of the few places in São Paulo I've been to. I'll let you all judge it yourselves:

Sure, it looks degenerated in parts, but it's hardly a slum. And once again, that proves my point: you actually seem to believe you were as poor as a person could be in São Paulo. You suggested that places that look worse than bairro da Luz weren't actually in São Paulo ("i dont think theres where i live that is possibly rio"). Honestly, at first I assumed you were upper middle class, or possibly even rich, because I thought there was no way a poorer person could be so blind to poverty. My mistake.

If I were to adopt your definition of poor (i.e. lower middle class), I'd know a lot of poor people too--my cousin, for starters. Since I went to a public university, I also met a lot of people who were "poor" there. Those were people who worked as English teachers part-time, or who found white collar jobs that only required a high school diploma. They might have had some difficulty making ends meet, but they were not poor.

The way you deny class stratification is kind of disgusting. I can't believe you're saying that poor people go to the same clubs as someone like Lovefoxxx. It's not a matter of price. Even if truly poor people could afford to frequent those places, they wouldn't. If they showed up, they would be shunned, and you know it.

Another example: in Belo Horizonte, it's common to find concerts by world-renowned musicians for about 5 reais (2,50 dollars). A while ago, Nelson Freire played here for that price. Do you honestly think there were poor people in the audience? By your definition of "poor", of course: there were hundreds of university students who had to work hard to pay tuition. But I'm sorry, this isn't what "poor" means. Not in this country.
