I skimmed through this month's GQ, which has an interview with Bale, and he mentioned listening to some of these tirade remixes on YouTube. At least he's not above realizing he was being an asshole and being somewhat good-humored about it, lol.

As for the film itself, I just posted my review of it in the big movie thread. Gave it a C+, but that's mainly for the quality of it. I still liked watching it on the big screen.

do you remember the scene where blair and marcus stop for a spell in the pouring rain, she sends marcus off to "find something that burns" and then there's a jarring cut to blair surrounded by three men -- the rain suddenly stopped, apparently -- they seem to be in mid conversation...? Everybody was around me in the theater going what the fuck? As if some long scene inbetween was just sloppily yanked out. This movie was just filled with amateur hackery like that. The story was appallingly bad. The very second skynet had kyle reese, they could have killed him they would've won. Why are they harvesting humans anyways?

a good rant from harry at aint-it-cool on why it sucks:
Harry releases the review of the flaming turd he's clenched for 2 days: TERMINATOR SALVATION! -- Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

a great analysis on how the script got murdered:
EXCLUSIVE: WHAT WENT WRONG WITH TERMINATOR SALVATION?

The whole thing with the little kid who never spoke was kind of unnecessary. I had really low expectations when my friends invited me, so it exceeded those, but it was still a little lame and predictable. It was more or less just a typical action movie with a Terminator theme to it, since the movie didn't end with that guy being sent back in time or anything.

not that it would of saved the movie under mcg's daft hands, but the original ending would have been so much better

I don't really like the original ending, but the script should've been completely overhauled if they were going to make Connor's part bigger. Instead it looks like they just cut out a few things and forced a few square pegs into round holes to cobble together the script that got shot and produced.

i don't really get why people hate it so much. on one hand they complain that it's not as good as the originals (or that they lack one easily identifiable villian like the originals) but it's not like the originals were literary masterpieces, and you'd complain if this film were exactly like the others (terminator assassin running around trying to nail connor). it's purposefully different, it's about the time in the future, during the war, before skynet is advanced enough to begin sending terminators through time. maybe as a standalone movie, i might be more likely to agree with some of the criticisms (such as that it's difficult to care about the characters), but if you're familiar with the whole thing, then to me it seems like a pretty sweet, mostly well done part of the whole story.

i didn't notice the rain thing debaser mentioned. if i did, sure that would seem amateurish and would annoy me. but of course there are going to be holes in the story. i mean, the premise that he sends his own father back through time to create himself is a fundamental contradiction you just kind of accept/overlook to buy into the whole terminator story. they've never really addressed how it plays out in the future when something changes in the past and ripples through to impact the future. you just kind of accept that. there's bound to be plenty more. the shut down signal is another, and the radio transmissions are another.

i think the action was intense and very tight. toward the beginning, the terminator with its legs blown off attacking -- that pretty effectively reminded people who brutal the machines are. the motorcycle terminators, pretty sweet. i think they did a cool job of showing some of the lineage of the terminators, how they were massive and more brute force oriented at first, and how they've evolved over time to become less and less easily detected as terminators. i think it was miles and miles better than terminator 3. i'm glad they had this ending instead of the endings mentioned (spoilers hidden, highlight to read (either john dying and using marcus's body to lead the resistance, or john dying and using marcus's body and that body going bad and killing everyone, skynet wins

i dunno, if you're trying to find something to hate, sure there's plenty of things you can find. but as a fan of the series, and someone who hated the second half of t3, i thought this movie was great

christian bale is a cool dude. he told tim booth of james (who had a bit part in batman begins) that he was a big fan of his band, which is pretty sweet.

Same here. I saw it the other day. Wasn't overly thrilled or disappointed. I guess I wanted more of a story equal to the visual effects.

probably 2002 or something, I think. They played in JHB, South Africa, at some day fest thing. There were other bands too, I cant remember why I was there. James isn't my thing.

I dug this movie a lot, even though it looks like it'll underperform and we'll never get a sequel (Considering how McG was talking about a time-traveling Skynet War movie, that may be a good thing.) I always figured Terminator would do great business and Star Trek would do so-so, but I guess that reversed.

The movie was overly dour for it's own good, but the few glimpses of the Future War in the Terminator series have always been a bit dour. (But it did miss the levity that the first 3 movies had. Is there a single joke in the entire flick? Maybe Marcus' "Magic" bit with the shotgun, which is one of the movie's better moments.).

But what really sold this movie is, shockingly, the direction and action by Mc-stupidname-G. That opening helicopter crash in the single take and then HOLY SHIT, LEGLESS TERMINATOR ATTACK is great. Sure, he's cribbing from Children of Men a bit, but it's solid and fun to watch. And any movie is worth a look if it features giant robots getting blown up by gas stations AND THE GIANT ROBOT IS STILL GOING. (I loved that whole chase scene that started in the abandoned gas station and then went to a truck vs. Terminator bike and then giant Terminator transport vs. fighter jets). And they pulled off the fake-Arnold really well. (Continuity glitch: did Reese get a good look at the skin-job T-800? He didn't know that Arnold was the Terminator in the first film until it pulled a gun on Sarah. Maybe Reese didn't remember the Arnold-model because he was distracted by it's balls when he saw it in the Terminator factory). But all of the action beats are very cool and very well directed. The fight against the T-800 felt like a rip-off from both the ending of Terminator 1 (factory setting) and how they cooled it down/blew up the T-1000 in Terminator 2 they did the same thing here to the T-800.

Bale is pretty bad. God help me, Nick Stahl is a better John Connor than Christian Bale. Stahl was actually complicated, Bale is just one-note. Bale's unprofessional rant hangs over the entire movie, but it's not too hard to be reminded of it considering how Bale is screaming the entire runtimme. But Sam Worthington picked up the acting slack. He had the emotional journey that carried the entire flick. Anton Yelchin was just kindnap bait to keep the plot moving, but he was decent and he got Reese's voice right. (The man is good at accents, this is his second sequel/prequel/reboot role in less than a month) I loved Helna Bonahm Carter's small scenes. It was basically exposition, but she made it sound really cool/menacing.

couldn't the entire movie feature at least one throwaway reference to the dearly departed Sarah Connor Chronicles? Cameron walking in the background, talk about Reese's brother? I mean, Jesus Christ, Star Trek had a reference to Enterprise - the bastard, franchise killer series! Enterprise! And couldn't get a little SCC love in here? At least they threw in a random but very cool shout-out to the "You Will Be Mine" song from T2. Nice to see even in a post-apocalyptic future, John Connor is still rockin the Gn'R. (Maybe it was the only tape had had that survived judgement day)

As far as franchise codas go (face it, it probably won't get a sequel), it isn't bad at all. It's 200 million dollar fan-service. And it leads pretty nicely into the beginning/end of the series, so we got the future war movie we were looking for. It's WAYYY different from the first 3 movies, but good for it for being an original entry into the series. At least it wasn't a fucking remake of T2 the way T3 was.

But I do like Terminator 3, flaws and all (I actually do think it's kind of funny and the gags obey the rules of the Terminator universe. And Arnold's "Don't do that" mouth-bullet catch is just great). Same with Salvation, it's flawed but very enjoyable. Solid flicks, but nowhere near the level of the Cameron movies.
