I have Tomtom on my phone and use my dad's Tomtom car unit and they are both pretty neat. When I was going to buy a car unit for myself, I believe the general consensus was Tomtom or Garmin.

It's based more on map usage than brand name. Navteq vs Telatlas. Navteq has consistently been rated more accurate. Garmin and Magellan use Magellan; TomTom uses Telatlas.
I also believe within North America Navteq has the advantage, whereas Telatlas maps Europe better. |

i could totally use. do you know how often i get lost? a lot.
i waste insane amounts of gas. the first time i go anywhere i get so fucking lost. after that im all good. im getting better at navigating my way around. i know arlington well. i know parts of dallas well. it's just going to and from that used to get me. i got lost going somewhere 15 minutes away last night. it was getting late so i turned around and went back home. wasted a quarter tank and i was just like 'shit, man'. i frustrate myself sometimes with that mess. i frustrate myself a lot actually. i shouldnt even be typing this. i should be up at school enrolling for summer courses. anything but here, y0. alright. i shou... nvm. |

the guy at the store said this one was super reliable but i think he was full of shit. the battery compartment is jammed, plus it doesn't sit well on the dash. i'd recommend a newer model, tbh

I have a Garmin, it works fine and has been very helpful.
TBH I think any GPS >>>>>>>>>>> no GPS Once you've had one you'll get used to it and probably won't want to change brands. In short, it's kinda like cell phones. |

I used a Magellan when I drove my friend to and from O'Hare a month ago. I liked it...pretty idiot proof with an easy-to-understand interface.

i mean seriously, the GPS has to be one of the most useless pieces of expensive technology in an array of many. If you can't find your way around a map or use google before you go somewhere you're fucking hopeless.

Who the fuck can always plan their route before leaving? That's the stupiioest thing you've ever said.
You're probably the same fuckup who won't pay bills online because you want 'paper copies'. |

Naw. I pay bills online all the time.
GPS is a stupid luxury, just get over it already. If you can't plan a route before leaving then you have some kind of serious moron problem. For example, yesterday I needed to get to the cable store to turn in a modem so I wouldn't get charged. I didn't know where it was so i looked it up on the internets. I saw where it was then I used my eyeballs to find it. I know, fucking primitive technology right. Oh and I used a map of San Antonio when I was in the car too. JESUS I NEED GPS SO BAD TO DO EVERYTHING FOR ME!!! IT'LL SAVE LIKE MAYBE FIVE MINUTES OF TIME!!! SWEET LORD LET ME COUGH UP 200 BUCKS PLUS A MONTHLY CHARGE TO SAVE FIVE MINUTES!!!!!! |

i dont have one, but i can see how it provides a lot of flexibility. often people are coordinating with others and plans change at the last minute. it's not under your control and gps provides an easy way to find out where you need to go, especially with incomplete information

so what they still range from 200-500 bucks.
i'm sure that's gonna change too, the price on the system will drop and then they'll start charging people monthly to use the service. it still does nothing I can't already do myself and adds nothing that top-line phones, which have far more utility, can't do already. Unless the computerized "turn right here" is very important to you. |

sometimes I get them in rental cars when I travel for work.... but I wouldn't ever buy one... I like to memorize the directions of where I'm going before I get there. And if I don't know where I'm going I am usually knowledgeable enough to drive around until I find it (without getting hopelessly lost)

in other news, the OTHER type of GPS are really annoying to use and I think about 90% of people who use them don't know how to properly use them. Give me the data in a real coordinate system you incompetent assholes.
