you have to accept INCREDIBLE COINCIDENCE. Kirk gets jettisoned, for no reason mind you - on a planet where old Spock is hiding? Then, Montgomery Scott who designed the theorum that lets them beam to the Enterprise is there as well? Kirk and Bones are thrust together into a shuttle next to each other? The fucking Enterprise is built a few minutes from Kirk's house?

The coincidences don't begin or stop there, but I like to suspend my disbelief regarding space shit, not regular day shit

spoilery:

kirk was jettisoned for mutiny

spock was dumped there by nero to view the collapse of nearby vulcan -- and since the enterprise was already in the area...its not that bad. Actually the incredible part is how Kirk and Spock and Scotty ended up within walking distance of each other.

Scotty didn't know the theory yet. Spock gave it to him. (just like how Scotty gave away the technology for transparent aluminum in IV)

And the more plausible way for kirk and mccoy to meet is what, exactly? Would you rather see them run into each other on the starfleet campus first? is that more to your sensibilities here? how do you know that's not how they met in the original timeline?

Nowhere in the movie did it say that that ship under construction was the Enterprise. It could have been some other federation ship.

A new timeline allows the writers to do *anything* in future movies. As a storytelling device it's a good move. They are no longer hemmed in by the history of the other star trek stories - no need to worry about contradicting them.

I agree

spoilery:
However the chances of Kirk and Scotty and Spock all being in walking distance of each other, and Kirk picking the one cave on the planet that was inhabited and by Spock no less was just a bit much. I mean there are 4 people on the whole planet and they're all original Enterprise members?

I saw this tonight. I liked it quite a bit. Went with a friend of mine who had already seen it twice.

It was a fun movie, that's for sure. Yeah, there are a lot of 'coincidences' in the movie for things to properly come together, but that's what happens in a lot of movies, especially of the sci-fi or action-type genre.

I thought the CGI was good, too. It didn't make me all fucking dizzy like a lot of overuse of CGI will do. I'm contemplating seeing this in IMAX tomorrow with a different friend, but that might make me puke with vertigo. We'll see.

Oh, also. Kirk and Spock (the young one, obviously, not Nemoy) are definitely good looking guys. I might go watch it again just to look at them. Hah.

these are only coincidences because you are looking back on them as such.

It was good and fun in a popcorn summer movie kind of way. My mind wasn't blown or anything like that, but that's to be expected. Star Trek has never done much for me. My biggest quibble was the ridiculous product placement. Kirk using a 24th century Nokia phone? Cadets ordering "Budweiser classic" in the bar? (Also, it's amazing just how happening a place Iowa becomes in the future.) Took me right out of the movie. Thankfully, they got all that out of the way early.

My hope is that this movie is a wild success and thus throws the gauntlet down at George Lucas, causing him to allow someone to make a decent Star Wars movie to match up.

uh, no.
while i'm watching the movie, i questioned why the enterprise was being built in kirk's town, and especially why the fuck all of them were on the same planet and kirk just happened to walk into the only cane that had someone in it, and it's fucking SPOCK. it's a big planet.

the only one of those things that i might say was a strange coincidence was spock being so close to kirk but that can easily be explained by saying he might have wanted to stay in hiding but also close to a federation base.

for the enterprise and scotty, it's not like they were a total deus ex machina or something. i mean, i'm not that familiar with the universe from the previous show or what have you so i'm not quite sure how they all came together in that universe but why aren't you pointing out that they all got assigned to the same ship for their first mission together? the only reason all this seems coincidental is because we know they who they are destined to become. if we had no idea what the enterprise was or who scotty was it would just seem like a chance meeting that ends up being significant

Yeah, I can appreciate that but I still don't think it was necessary.

did you see the previous prequel Enterprise tv series? It was awful. Trying to find interesting stories within an already laid out history just crippled them.

Actually I disagree. What crippled them was that they made a series that by all reasons SHOULD have appealed to the built in Trek audience, but they insulted them all by having crazy out of context shit like Romulans and Borg and Ferengi show up. They killed their base, and everything else fell right behind

i saw it on monday night. i loved it and i've only been a big fan of the first and second seasons of the original series by chance that my friend got them as a gift on dvd and we watched them a lot and chuckled. the whole coincidence thing is silly. that's like saying "oh, darth vader just happened to be luke skywalker's dad! pfft!"

And isn't the fact that Vulcan is now destroyed and 99% of Vulcans are dead going to royally mess with the timeline? Does anyone think each subsequent movie will deal with a slight variation of a scenario we already saw in the original series or previous movies? How is it so important to the universe that the crew of the Enterprise get together, but after that it's totally fine to diverge from the "real" timeline?

Maybe by earning their respective jobs/ranks, by serving on different ships and making their way to the Enterprise at different times? Instead of getting arbitrarily thrown into the assignments all at once, without having even graduated?

the movie was like 2 long already, when would they have had time to flesh something like that out?

actually at least that made more sense as they both had the Force and thus would have met to fight anyway. this stuff was just silly.

You don't have to actually show them serving on different ships for crying out loud. Just give a reasonable impression of these characters having some actual history and experience. Have some of them already serving on the Enterprise, and settled into their roles, before the Vulcan mission begins. It would not take much work or time.

Whatever, I actually liked it a lot and I'll probably see it again, something I rarely do. I don't want to slam it forever and ever.

i agree with topleybird. instead of having to explain "oh! for no reason within 10 feet of spock's hidden cave that kirk just happens to run into when he's about to die, there's also scotty!" they could have just had scotty fucking ASSIGNED TO BE AN ENGINEER ON THE ENTERPRISE. this isn't rocket science.

It's a little far-fetched, but it makes sense that Kirk's pod tried to get close to the Federation base. We know that Nero wanted old Spock to live (so that he can feel his loss) so it makes sense that he put him near the base.

any one of those things or people being in the neighborhood: sure. all three, at the same time and especially that kirk runs right into spock? in the cave? seriously?
