I don't know about that so much, but I think he did have the highest combined amount of conservatism and name recognition among those who were in the running. If there was anyone more conservative than Steele in the mix, it was someone I'd never heard of.

Steele, for better or worse, got picked mainly because he had more name recognition and media presence than the other guys (I mean, really, who the fuck is Katon Dawson?). To reduce it down to skin color alone is stupid.

you're confusing the party at large for people in the party, again. Nobody "picked" him other than the people who voted for him. Again, read the news from the past year, the party was bitterly divided between Obama and Clinton for months and months and months.

it's not like a NC chairman who is picked by the party.

Exactly. The guy was plucked out of almost complete obscurity and given the keynote address slot at the 2004 convention. That doesn't happen unless someone's got big plans for you.

Granted, Obama did take the ball and run with it, and in so doing probably exceeded all expectations of just how quickly he could be groomed into a Presidential candidate. There was no "me too" pandering going on here because the GOP had nothing to prove. Before 2 weeks ago, the GOP had put Powell and Rice in the most powerful government positions that a black person had ever held. The Secretary of State position is way more important than the fucking RNC chairman position. Does this not make sense to you?

So therefore, no one in the GOP was thinking about topping or countering the selection of Obama with this pick. If Steele had been white, the vote count would have been exactly the same. It's not really the GOP that is making a big deal out of the fact that he's black, its the media who insist on writing articles with titles similar to the title of this thread.

I think you're unfairly taking credit away from Steele and the hard work that he has put in to be able to earn himself a spot as chairman. I don't think you would call it a coincidence if you knew how he had worked his way up through Maryland politics.

Why are you so worried that the GOP may have picked him to keep up with the Democratic party? You should be celebrating the fact that this was just a copy-cat move by Republicans that will backfire, and that the Republican party will soon face its ultimate demise. I don't understand what makes you happy.
