That was awesome. Indefinite Crisis is not. Now I heard Morrison's run on X-Men is pretty good but I have my doubts. |

Even though Morrison sometimes forgets basic things, like, you know, exposition and rational plot development, I have enjoyed the "Crossover On Crack" vibe of Final Crisis. He's the last guy you'd expect to do a universe-shaping event which is why it's fun. And I've enjoyed it alot more than the paint-by-numbers silver-age fetish wank that was Infinite Crisis and even more than Morrision's sorta blah New X-Men run. While I thought Marvel Secret Invasion was well done, FC keeps unrelentingly throwing wacky shit at the audience and it doesn't stop to explain everything.
There's an evil God who is destroying existence as we know it. Deal. |

Crossovers are inherently stupid. You people are killing comics.

Civil War and Secret Invasion were stupid, Final Crisis is fucking awesome. You do have to know some DC characters and chronology.

Well, if you're buying into the concept of a shared universe (having Spidey swing by the Baxter Building, Batman teaming up with Superman, etc. etc.) then a crossover is a part of that cohesive whole. Sure, they do have their share of bombastic silly moments (ie. killing Batman which we all know won't last a whit), but if it's a good story told with multiple characters, what the heck is the problem? (I don't buy every single tie-in issue, that's downright idiotic. I buy the main mini and that's basically it.)

You know what the problem is: when every single issue of every single comic book is part of or dealing with the effects of the last crossover our building up the next one. I mean seriously they seem to only exist to set up the next crossover and it's making it so that anyone that actually wants to read comics dives headfirst into a pile of crap that only exists to set up the next thing you HAVE TO BUY. And every crossover seems to claim that it will CHANGE THE UNIVERSE FOREVER and it just gets to the point where it's just stupid. Comics existed for decades without enormous crossovers. I've been reading X-Men from Giant Size on and it's fairly amazing how they can create self-contained issues and still build long running plot threads. Part of this, I'm sure, is because they don't have to worry about some editorial caveat about having to gear their stories towards creating tensions for company wide crossover events.
I mean really, if a company wide crossover was done every few years when the continuity needed a kick in the ass, it would be fine but these things seem to pop up constantly lately and last for half the year. And think about this, you don't buy the "tie-ins" but they constitute a major part of individual titles which are now completely impossible to pick up and read. Dude no offense but you sound like any generic fanboy bashing the concept of a tie-in. If the story's good, it's good. If it sucks, it sucks.

The fan boy that doesn't buy comics.
Whatever dude. Shit sucks. There's a reason I don't buy comics anymore and there's a reason top sellers these days are about 200,000 copies. And you can go "if it sucks it sucks," and yet, crossovers always always always suck. |
