I don't know if anyone knows this, but none of us are qualified to say what is and isn't the best album of the nineties because (get ready) everyone has different tastes and preferences. As far as I'm concerned, if you think an album is the best album of the nineties, it IS the best album of the nineties.

you've really gone off the deep end here; i hope you're just being argumentative

you can't tell me that black star and bones and fake plastic trees aren't amazing songs

Thanks for the official word. I was wondering how great it truly was, but now that you've made a verdict I can rest easy.

Dude, I don't care how good you think "Nice Dream" is. The lyrics and the way they're delivered is almost laughable. I'm not making any argument for anything else besides that.

If it was an EP, it would have been perfect. As an album, it is merely average.
Stop that! Jesus.

whoa! i totally agree with your negativity. word for word.
right down to the individual songs, seriously.

it was my favorite album for years when i was like 15. it's extremely emotive and catchy, i'll give it that, i can see it's appeal... but really, there are plenty of just as strong rock albums that are more interesting, more consistent, more emotionally diverse and less dependant on teenage-angsty lyrics (such as, oh, i don't know, ok computer and kid a).

To be honest, I can't for the life on me remember how half of the songs on the Bends go and I used to play the shit out of the record 2 or 3 years back. But I think Radiohead would agree with Mr. Pitchfork here. That is why they created songs like Treefingers and Like Spinning Plates. Even though Radiohead shits on the Pixies. Let's get real.

Sean Casey is right about The Bends not really being all that unique. There's nothing new to the formula, no, but The Bends, song for song, is probably more raw and emotional than any album from that time period sans maybe The Downward Spiral, and I think that's why people like it. Thom Yorke's voice is damn near perfect on that album, the production's great, the guitars glisten--none of it's new, but they do it really well and they do it like they mean it.

Sepiae always gets on my case that Radiohead is a gloomy, depressing band, and I disagree--a lot of people see Kid A and Amnesiac as nihilistic, but aside from a few very openly emotive songs (Motion Picture Soundtrack, not coincidentally from the OKC era), I think they know they're singing about these things and so there's a huge layer of irony on the whole thing. The Bends isn't like that, and it resonates with people. I think if you love it, you probably love it in a very visceral, emotional way.

I also think it helps that even if the title track and Black Star are Pixies ripoffs (which they are), and even if Bulletproof is somewhere in between Nick Drake and the Cure (which it is), they're all really good songs.
