whose bright idea was it to make it impossible to set shortcuts for special characters in word 2008? I don't have a num pad on this laptop so every single time I want a letter with umlauts, I have to go into the menu, find it, and manually insert it.

For anyone needing advanced typographic formatting, word ain't but a fancier notepad. Word 2007 still doesn't support ligatures! It's supposed to work in 2008 though, but there's no PC version which does.

You can save them as word documents. And unless you pull out some crazy formatting it should be compatible.
