How safe is it accepting a PayPal payment from someone who is unconfirmed?

I sold an item (not on eBay) and told the guy to send payment via PayPal confirmed address. He is from Germany; so I allow the option this one time to accept payment from non-US account holders. I didn't realize that my account says "Block US buyers without confirmed address from sending payment". There is no option to block international buyers without confirmed addresses.

Anyway so I have the unconfirmed payment; it's almost $300 so I want to be sure I can be safe. Anyone have any experience with this kind of situation? The guy is pretty trustworthy and really well liked on the message board he is from; so my hunch is telling me it's ok but on the other end I don't want to get screwed out of $300. Should I ask him to confirm his address before shipping (is this possible to do on PayPal for international)?

what is this "confirming" all about? i never really understood this.

and how would it screw you out of $300? wouldn't it rather screw him out of receiving the item?
