Next up for me:

A solid A-. Another book that's a bit on the sentimental side, but it's a really elegantly constructed narrative in four different (and distinct) voices. Another interesting and different take on WWII and racism. Recommended.

You should read the rest of Heart of Darkness Eulogy. I didn't like it at first either but by the end I couldn't put it down. Also, it's pretty short.

This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession by Daniel J. Levitin - B-
The first several chapters of this were really, really dry. Lots of music theory and stuff like that, but aftwards it does get a lot more interesting. Nothing super surprising but if you like both music and / or neuroscience, it is a fairly quick read.

I came to the conclusion that Conrad's a racist hack based on the parts I read, the excerpts from the latter portion, and Chinua Achebe's review of it.

So fuck that guy. Also, The Secret Sharer was one long, drawn out homoerotic masturbation session. I read that. Conrad blows.

If anyone cares, here's Achebe on Conrad:

you would. why don't you read the rest of the fucking book and think about it for more than ten seconds before judging it? i've read achebe's criticism and i get where he's coming from, but you have to remember the time in which the story was written. also, it doesn't hurt to take into account you know, like, what the book is about. i guess you didn't get that far.

I would?

I'm sorry, I've got more (and better) shit that I have to read. No time to revisit a racist hack whose only other famous work sucks ass.

In all honesty though, I'd read the whole thing if I didn't have other things that need tending to that I actually have to do. But nothing I've heard about it, nothing I've learned about it in classes, and nothing I've read in it myself have done much to dissuade me from thinking that it's not canonical.

I'm on my second book by David Starkey. Historical biographies. I first read "Elizabeth: The Struggle for the Throne" (It was called something else in the UK... "The Early Years" or something) and I quite enjoyed it, so I went out and bought his "Six Wives of Henry VIII".

I've been distracted from it for several reasons, so I'm not even through Catherine of Aragon yet, but I really enjoy what I've read so far.

Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's by John Elder Robison - C+
I thought this was going to be a lot better than it was. Most of the time it seemed more like a straight up memoir rather than somebody trying to explain how he seems the world in a way that is different than most people. I guess if I had not already read a bunch of articles and some books on similar topics I would be more interested in this.

I've been an awful reader lately. Not doing much of it.

All I've read this year is meager:

Mattheu Roth - Losers [awful]

&

33 1/3: My Bloody Valentine - Loveless [it was OK]

Alright. I didn't like it as much as High Fidelity but it wasn't terrible.
