I started the first 20 pages of gravity's rainbow but then put it down because i'm atleast trying to read Against the Day in fits and spurts. Pynchon is amazing, hilarious and just utterly mad but he can be hard to read.

That's pretty accurate, amazing, hilarious, mad and at times difficult. The beat influence is pretty prominent in this.

generally though it's fantastic.

i'm reading against the day because it's kind of steampunkish with the Chums of Chance (hahaha) and their zeppelin and stuff. There are so many characters though with absolutely ridiculous names it can get sorta confusing at times. I'm aware it's not nearly as highly praised as V. or Gravity's Rainbow but it's more my style so I'm going to at least attempt to finish it.

Pretty awesome

Dumb

Also dumb.

Whatever sort of "postmodern" literary jackoff session that has been happening over the last decade or so really needs to just stop. If this is the sort of shit literature students learn about in 50/100 years, I feel really, really sorry for them.

Currently reading:

Only 55 pages in, but I gotta finish it by Thursday. Seems pretty neat so far.

I was blown away, by the way. Best Discworld novel in years, several of my friends claim it's the best one ever.

Friend of the Earth ended up being pretty awesome.

Just read this today. Short, quick, hilarious. Sometimes I love being an English major.

I sure hope so. All the awful shit I read last semester was for a creative writing class. I don't know if she was just prodding us to try to make us "think outside of the box" or whatever... but she definitely liked all the shit she had us read. I just never got into it. Worthless, meaningless. Weird for the sake of being weird.

You have described just about every creative writing class currently in existence. There should be a law against them. The teachers who take them are worthless, pretentious idiots who are typically too stupid to teach anything else.

In one lecture a professor actually asked the class if anyone reads books from finish to start like she does to 'avoid being caught in the author's snare'.

Well in my first one we read some really good short stories. And the one who taught me the second one has a couple published novels and poetry books. I don't want to slam her because I did like her and really enjoyed maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of the assigned reading.... but some of the stuff was just too goddamn weird.

She also never said anything about "the author's snare" lol.

Really, really fantastic. And a relatively quick read. Might be a bit too sentimental for some people, but I'm all over that shit. The most unique take on WWII I've come across (admittedly that isn't a very large pool). Excellent. Read it.

Currently on the nightstand:

Can't tell but the last one is the book that accompanies Richard Skelton's "Landings" small-press edition. Field notes, poem fragments, found journals, etc.
