I'm in the middle of Jane Eyre and I probably won't get a chance to finish it because I have to return it to the library before I leave and I have a ton of other shit I need to do, but it's a fucking spectacular book.

I was pleased to find out that Charlotte Brontė thought Jane Austen was uptight bitch who wrote in a totally displeasing and passionless manner. Awesome. We would have been great friends.

Anyway I want to finish Jane Eyre at some point and then maybe read Wuthering Heights. I'm turning full on gay here aren't I.

We're reading E.M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel now which is pretty interesting. Seems like he was a cool dude.

It was about John Brown. Very good.

steve martin's born standing up. i almost forgot he did stand up. easy read, i kept expecting the book was about to get really good but then it didnt happen.

charles bukowski's women. i like simple writing like him and vonnegut. i prefer vonnegut because whereas he writes with morals, it seems like there more of a point to his writing.

charolette roche wetlands. pretty gross but there is some funny stuff too. she is a really great daughter to go to such great lengths to try to reunite her parents and save the family.

michael turners pornographers poem. i read half of this years ago. i liked it way more now though, as i am slowly becoming less of an idiot. he is fantastic writer, really gets into the mind of a young person

bob dylans autobigraphy. cant wait for the next volumes of this.

You guys suck for letting this thread plunge so far down.

Anyway, since I last posted, I have read the following (reviews are from my GoodReads account) :

Sam Harris - The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason
Sam Harris made a lot of good points and definitely had me thinking a lot about his stance. A lot of errors and misunderstandings, though. - 2/2.5 stars

Howard Hunt - Young Men on Fire: A Novel
For a modern novel, it was OK. - 2 stars

Tobias Wolff - The Barracks Thief: Stories
Really enjoyed every story in this collection. T. Wolff has a way of drawing you into the stories. I wished it went on forever. - 4 stars

Robert Lipsyte - One Fat Summer
I thought this was OK. Not good, not bad. - 2 stars

Steve Almond & Julianna Baggott - Which Brings Me To You: A Novel In Confessions
Book was pretty excellent, except the ending wasn't a big enough payoff. - 3 stars

Hemingway - Torrents of Spring

Hemingway is so hit or miss for me that it's kinda frustrating and this one kinda fell in between good and just okay. - 3 stars

I finished Sophie's World a few weeks ago, my girlfriend got it for me for my birthday. It is a novel about this fifteen year old Norwegian girl taking a mysterious course in philosophy. It was pretty good.

I wanted to read War and Peace this summer but I saw The Toilers of the Sea by Hugo at the bookstore and so I'm reading that instead. Victor Hugo is probably my favorite writer. Have you read Les Mis yet, D? You should.

I have not read it. I liked that 1997 movie, though.

Ian McEwan - On Chesil Beach - A

Man writes so spectacularly I don't even know what to say about him. I will rifle through the rest of his work (already read Saturday) as soon as I have time. But I have some other stuff already that I should read too.

I hated Atonement, but I was definitely intrigued by this one during my last trip to the bookstore. There were some hard copies on remainder. I may have to go back and grab it.

I just finished Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian. It was interesting, but not interesting enough to sustain the level of detail you have to delve through to get to the story. A little too repetitive.

Last night, I started The Sun Also Rises. Time to catch up on classics.

The Night in Lisbon was awesome. Remarque is probably one of my favorite authors.

Now, I'm on to Hogg by Samuel R. Delaney:

Maybe you're just not into him, or maybe Atonement isn't as good. I dunno because I've only read two of his books but hot DAMN I loved the shit out of them. And On Chesil Beach is so short that it can't be considered a waste of much time if you end up hating it. Go get it.

Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All Night Runner, Dean Karnazes

guy runs far a la forrest gump, writes about it:

Most notably, he ran 135 miles nonstop across Death Valley in 120°F temperatures, and a marathon to the South Pole at -40°F. In 2006, he ran 50 marathons, in all 50 US states, in 50 consecutive days, finishing with the New York City Marathon, which he completed in three hours flat.

quick read, cheesily recounted "dialogue", though not too distracting... overall makes you want to get up and almost kill yourself trying to run really far, climb a mountain or do more pushups than anyone ever has, etc. i like hearing people try to explain their will of endurance
