Default ricky gervais gets fucked and garry shandling fucks himself

most of you won't understand what garry shandling is doing but it is pretty great stuff.

the most interesting thing about the clips are how garry shandling constantly defuses all attempts by gervais to take control over the situation. when he asks if they should conduct the interview and walks away without waiting for a respons, shandling just stays behind. he is obviously ruining things for himself at the same time since most people can't see how manipulative gervais is and just gets the impression that shandling ss an asshole.

Yeah. I doubt you're being serious but it's obviously staged and scripted.

it's not scripted. gervais stopped doing the interviews after that one because it was too unpleasant. you're not a very perceptive person.

So Gervais was planning on a career in interviewing other comedians/actors? Damn it's too bad this one went so badly. I guess it would make sense that two people who had shows based on social awkwardness wouldn't intentionally try to make an interview where there's a bunch of awkwardness. That would just be... too obvious I guess.

So Dean, would you actually have an opinion if there weren't YouTube comments?

i think you should compare it with the larry david interview in which they get on perfectly well and there are no akward moments at all (which is odd considering that larry david doesn't exactly shy away from awkwardness in his comedy either). Ricky has conducted all other interviews in a very smarmy, circle jerk way that haven't given rise to any awkward moments. if the had sat down and scripted the interview, it would have been funny awkwardness but you have to be a bit retarded not to see the genuine animosity there and realize that there's way too much downtime for it to be scripted.
it's also interesting that you bring up that point about both of their comedic styles being based on awkwardness since it's exactly the same term used on the garry shandling page on wikipedia

"but the general consensus was that it felt "awkward",[4][5][6] a hallmark of each man's comedic style.[7][8]"

now THAT is blatant stealing.

It was used through all of the YouTube comments as well. I'm a total thief.

I watched all six parts and if he was bothered by the interview then whatever, Gervais is a total pussy. Shandling made some comments that were rude but they could have been edited out, as could have been the phone calls and everything else that didn't fit. It was obviously set up. People in the industry know reputations.

You're such a tool, Dean. You have to always argue every little point and never admit that you could possibly be wrong and you have no understanding of humility unless it's a veiled narcissistic attempt to get sympathy.

the show was live with only commercial breaks in between. this might have explained the lack of editing possibilities. people in the industry cannot really change that. it's also interesting that you don't realise that you have argued every point so far as well, albiet not very successfully. now crawl back under your rock.

I guess someone else posting on imdb.com is just as stupid as I am:

Quote:
This interview was an excellent exhibition of the comedy of awkwardness that both comedians are famous for. Both men have tried to blur the lines of reality, moving their characters into the "real world". Gervais, for example, has often put on his obnoxious act when going on chat shows or doing charity work. This interview with Shandling was just the next step and it was made successful because Gervais had an excellent partner to work with. The fact that they fooled so many people into thinking their awkwardness was real is a testament to that. If you didn't get it the first time, watch it again with this in mind. There are quite a few moments where Ricky can barely suppress his laughter at what Gary is doing.

that didn't contain any counter argument to what i've stated earlier in the thread. i don't really know what you're trying to achieve by just posting a persons opinion without any counterarguments or new arguments, should i be so intimidated by the fact that some dude on IMDB.COM has posted something that i just change my mind even though nothing new is added? if enough people believe that communism will work, does that make it a functional way to govern society? that's kindergarten strategy.

let's go over it again:

- the show was live, no room for editing
- if that is the best script two funny guys can come up with together, it's a pretty horrendeous failure. the office had awkward moments but they were funny as well.
- all the other interviews didn't contain any of these hostile, awkward moments at all. which belies the theory that "two akwkard comedians trying to talk with each other will lead to constant awkwardness". look at the larry david interview.

these interviews where made as pretty serious discussions about comedy where Ricky wanted it to look like he was pally with some big heroes of his. when he hit a brick wall with
Garry Shandling, the game wasn't funny anymore and he stopped. now like i said, crawl back under your rock and stay hidden, at least out of that humility you claim to have.

so he's like this in person yet you believe it's scripted? that's odd. sure the guy is obviously trying to joke, they both are, but there is genuine hostility there as well. in the beginning it's just from Garry Shandling but later Ricky gets more and more irritated as well.

well obviously they don't like each other

ricky is obnoxious in real life

but it was scripted -- ricky would want it to be scripted because he wants to squeeze jokes in as much as possible

It wasn't live and I don't know why you thought it was. Unless there's another version that isn't on YouTube.

It's entertaining that you're fooled by actors at least.

I'll crawl under the rock now. Forever. This is my last post on Netphoria.

dean i think you read too much into this shit

it seems like the awkwardness was intentional. i think shandling was putting on this character even if it didn't seem like it

you're not really good at concentrating for longer periods than 5 minutes at a time look at clip 6 at the end. the following conversation takes place:

"this is going to be edited right"

"this is live, we've..it's late in england, about 2 in the morning"

"if i knew that in the beginning i still don't think i would have tried harder"

so that is a clue that it's live. if you've found better sources that tells otherwise, please show them. if you haven't, i'm right.

directly afterwards this happens:

"how long does it take you to set it up"

"48 minutes"

"let's get what we need, now you're going to do the DVD"

"no i'm going to go now"

"that was the deal we struck, i did the best i could, sorry"

the last bit was probably reffering to a DVD that shandling released later that year or perhaps the year after. apparently he and ricky had made an agreement that ricky would be on the DVD if he got the interview but refused after what he thought of as a bad treatment from shandling. feel free to respond again but the result will be just as pathetic as before.

do you think the other interviews were scripted as well? is it the level of the jokes ricky makes? listen to the xfm shows ricky did with stephen merchant. they were almost completely unscripted after 2002 and it's about the same level of half decent gags and giggling. ricky doesn't need the interviews to be scripted to squeeze in jokes.
