Dumb question

can someone please fill me in on what the whole situation is here.. i didn't grow up in california and it didn't happen where i grew up, so it's never been explained to me.

near the home depot, there are always a few guys, sometimes many, just hanging around. there are a few other locations where they do this. as i understand it, they're gathering there for work? like if i'm a contractor and i need some day laborers to help with shingling a roof or something, i drive by there and grab a few of these guys?

is that it? what else am i missing?

how do they get selected, just appearance? i'm guessing there's no 'interview' to speak of.

are there sometimes package deals? for example, "i'm known as the best laborer, but i won't work for you unless you agree to hire my lazy brother as well" ?

what time to they get there? what time do people stop by looking to pick them up?

is there a time of day after which you give up, if you're standing around, assuming no one else is looking for workers?

do they have wives at home who nag them about not standing around good enough?

what the hell is going on here

Those are illegal immigrants. It's nice that they all line up together in a known location and our government does nothing about it.

Texas has corners set aside for them. They are day workers for hire and nearly always immigrants.

By 6 a.m. you can have a good handful sometimes. By 9 a.m. it's thinned out. People are hired by appearance, yeah, and some are well known to be good workers. Some are always picked up by the same guys and just wait there as a convenient pick-up spot.

is it technically illegal for people to hire them?

it's a little confusing i guess. this city where i work is so hyper-vigilant when it comes to parking tickets and speeding violations and noise complaints.

personally, i don't really give a hoot, and would probably feel sad if the city cracked down on these dudes just trying to make a buck. but that's probably indicative of some of the reasons why holding a position of civil authority doesn't interest me in the least

it is illegal to hire illegal immigrants, especially since it is illegal to pay them off the books, as it were

are there ever sting operations? where an undercover cop will put on some carharts and drive an old truck to pick up some laborers, and then bust 'em? or maybe an undercover cop will stand with the laborers, and when he's selected by a contractor, bust 'im? is one side more likely than the other to get stung if there are sting operations?

Undercover policemen won't do anything, as most states and cities don't feel like it's their jurisdiction and even if they did have the power to really do anything about it, they wouldn't have any help. Enforcing the border is really in the federal realm and the federal goverment doesn't do anything about it so people rarely get in trouble for any of this.

We're not even deporting some illegals caught and arrested for misdemeanors, why would we bother setting up stings?
