Nice pictures, Mooney. My concert pictures aren't nearly as good:

Bowerbirds

Sharon Van Etten

Shearwater

Other pictures I took kind of recently:

I thought Mooney was professional? He mentioned a paid photography gig recently (I think).

But anyway, thanks. My gear is sub-par (entry-level DSLR, kit lens, cheap manual focus 50mm f/1.8 from the early 1980s), but I try to work with what I have. I got into photography because I wanted good pictures of the places I traveled to, but now I'm trying to branch out a little.

Mooney and Rairun, I really enjoyed your photos. Go figure out how to make $ off of your work.

there's just a very tiny market for actual professional music photographers. most pros feel that people willing to shoot for free are killing their profession, and honestly believe that every single person at a show with a camera that isn't getting a paycheck for being there is stealing from them. in a fucked up analogy, a local pro posted on facebook likening himself to a record shop, while photographers working for free are illegal mp3's.

i say FUCK THAT. they can blame only thier clients who aren't willing to pay for their product/services. i'm not going to feel guilty for doing something i love. that would be like if you were trying to make a living off letting people pay you to suck your dick, and you expecting me to abstain from receiving blowjobs unless i find a chick willing to pay me for it because it hurts your business.

i've done a couple paid festivals for CBC Radio, but our prime minister gutted the CBC's funding, so they can't afford to hire photographers anymore. we can't afford public broadcasting because we have to buy $40 billion worth of fighter jets.

Ha, the analogy would kind of work if he meant myspace had killed the music industry by over-saturating the market with free music. Except it didn't.

But yeah, that's ridiculous. I work as a translator, and I see a lot of colleagues complaining that beginners (or non-qualified people) drive prices down, because they are willing to work for almost nothing. I think the complaint is legitimate, but only in the sense that people wouldn't work for that little if they weren't desperate. They're being exploited and it just happens to harm us too. But when it comes to things people do for pleasure, like music or photography, there's nothing to complain about. It does make the profession unfeasible for a lot of people, but no one is entitled to earn a living doing what they love, particularly if it means stopping other people from doing it altogether.
