1: Edinburgh.
2: York.
3, 4, 5, 6 and 7: Countryside around Edale, in the Peak District.

And yes, I love that place. Woke up at 5am yesterday to get there in time to see the sunrise.

Thanks!

But no, photography is just a hobby. I toyed with the idea of getting better glass (and a body, for that matter) to shoot concerts, but then I decided against it. I don't think I want to make it a job - and even if I did, there'd still be a lot to learn before I could. I can work with my limitations reasonably well, but I know little to nothing about using filters, flash photography, etc.

I love your images Rairun, really beautiful stuff. They remind me of the train journey I took between Carlisle and London on Wednesday - not enough people are photographing these kind of places.

The only criticism I have is that you are pushing the saturation slightly too hard on some of the images which give them a bit of an HDR look - but the compositions and choice are excellent

nice pics but i also think you are pushing the saturation a bit far. i love the frost on the grass in this one:

Yeah, I actually agree. I usually expose for the highlights and then try to bring the shadows out, but sometimes I end up overdoing it and the image looks flat (a bit like HDR). I do adjust the saturation afterwards (because fill light + contrast increases it), but yeah, I guess sometimes I don't bring it down enough.

From the ones I posted, the only one I wasn't quite happy with was this one:

I'm posting it again because when I tried to update it on Picasa, it changed the link. The old one is probably going to be deleted from the servers soon, but while it isn't, you can see how it looks slightly different. ETA: Never mind, it updated the old picture. They all look the same.

exposing for highlights and then attempting to bring out the shadows is good practice. blown highlights are really noticeable and will ruin photos, but a loss of detail in the darkest shadows is rarely a big deal.

digitally, you can recover under exposed. over exposure just becomes 'white' info and there is nothing you can do about it anymore.

the same goes for blacks, like in the above b+w there would be areas in the rocks with zero info and can't be recovered, but it's not noticeable and looks fine. but even an overexposed white spot in the middle of the clouds would really be noticeable.

You guys have any good recommendations for a camera?

I want to start photography as a hobby, and all I have is a crappy ass digital one from the stone age.

And should I get a digital one or another one?

if your camera truly is from the stone age, you could buy just a little point and shoot for like $80 and work on composing good shots. it will take almost as good photos under normal conditions. as barden alludes to, buying a fancy camera will not make you a good photographer.
