also I don't want to start a new thread but I have a question/request for advice from the more professional photo editors around these parts:

My primary computer is a macbook but I don't have photoshop on it, so I do my photo editing on a PC with a high def screen. Usually all I do is fix the levels a bit and enhance the color by switching to lab color and then adjusting the curves slightly, which I think is a trick I learned from someone in this thread actually. So anyway, this makes the colors and contrast pop really nicely on my photos. They look good to me, anyway. Problem is, when I port them back over to my mac or view them online, the enhanced photographs look significantly worse than the originals. They are extremely washed out... poor contrast, dull, greyish tones, etc. The first picture below is the original, and the second is shopped.

I'm on my macbook now, and the shopped one looks like ass. If you look at the darker purple band on the bottom of the dress or the color of the grass, both are much more washed out than in the original. However, when I view these photos on the PC I shopped them on, the new one looks much better. I know that the screen on this mac isn't exactly optimal compared to the HD one, but I don't really understand how the enhanced colors could wind up looking so much worse? Is there something easy I could be doing to prevent so much loss of depth and vibrancy on a lower quality monitor?

i've had similar issues. try switching color space to sRGB instead of adobe RGB. i think the difference between them is negligible, but your photos should always look proper on the web.

Even though this is a photo thread, I think this question might be logical to toss in here... have any of you ever transferred slides? I've got a semi-new Epson flatbed scanner with a little tray that partitions them off. It works pretty well.

Any general advice? DPI? Dust Removal tips?

Volunteered to do my folks' 5,000+ slides - quickly realizing how HUGE of a job this is going to be.

no scanning advice, sorry.

took this photo the first time i ever shot live music, and it's quite possibly still my favourite. rick white of eric's trip - the first canadian band signed to sub pop records.

That's Cwm Idwal in North Wales.

I wasn't aware we had Scottish netphorians. :P I went to Edinburgh for the Book and Fringe Festivals -- it was pretty awesome. By the way, I read some of you guys are coming to Manchester to see the Pumpkins (I moved to the UK one year ago), but I don't think I want to spend £40 on old man Bill.

Izzle. Is Emelie Autumn cool or not?

Rairun we have a few Netphorians in Scotland (Christhimself, The Jesus, Glasgowkiss, ToysChokeToys etc) all upstanding gentlemen apart from The Jesus who I haven't met yet and suspect may be in prison.

Also was the AP gig in Edinburgh? I had tickets to one of those but didn't go in the end.

yes and no. she's massively talented at many things and has more alpha mojo than amanda palmer and angelina jolie put together. billy was probably intimidated by her.

her music is high-concept and can be enjoyed on a certain level. but its not ear candy.

still, if you get a chance to see her, absolutely do it. one of the best live performers i've seen.

I wasn't familiar with his music, but the show was really cool. I was pleasantly surprised.

No, that was the British Library show in London. I saw her in Edinburgh too, and it wasn't bad, but the London show was better. But the best one was by far the Neil Gaiman secret reading my girlfriend and I managed to get tickets to. Got there at midnight along with 30 other people or so, and they led us up to a room where they read stories and played music. Here's some bad P&S pictures:

It was Jason Webley. I'm not a huge fan of his stuff (when I'm alone, I mean), but he puts on a really fun live show.
