his pictures are always so cool. he probably steals them from a blog or a forum somewhere because he likes fooling people into giving him compliments he doesn't deserve as a bitter sarcasm over how much he hates himself. i'd like to think so at least

So it's autumn, probably the best season, and the colors have started working their way down the escarpment of the eastern sierra. It's not new england or colorado, where fall paints entire valleys and mountains, but we do get naturally occuring fall color in california in the form of aspens that grow along the lakes and their respective creeks and canyon drainages.

seasons just started. gonna do more leaf peeping the next couple weeks cause i'm an old man who enjoys old people hobbies

i will post some, too. these are from a little outing yesterday. note the mud and rock dwellings with satellite dishes on top. the people living in such small villages are of Berber descent-- "native" Moroccans, unlike the Arab population. This village is relatively close to civilization, with roads and electricity, though some of them are just way the fuck out there, completely isolated in the mountains, where the people farm their land and bring water up from nearby rivers. Each area has its own specific dialect of the language, which can vary greatly from one village to the next. also, goats:

When you save your image in Photoshop, go to "Edit", then "Convert to Profile", then select "sRGB". If you save in Adobe RGB, it'll look washed out when you post it on the internets.

(But if you're going to print them, use Adobe RGB)

You should be able to do that with any other photo editting program you use too, like GIMP.

More shots from the eastern sierra, the most underrated part of California...maybe my favorite part of the state.

Bodie , CA. 10,000 residents by 1880. Designated ghost town by 1915.

The ancient bristlecone pine forest is a bit hard to reach. Gotta drive off the main highway to a very rugged and steep state highway, and then turn off to an even more rugged road, which becomes and even more and totally unpaved access road for the last 12 miles. It's an ascent from 3,000 to 12,000 ft done in just 20 miles. So it wasn't easy getting up there, but its for good reason: these are the oldest living free standing organisms on the entire planet. The grove I photographed includes an unmarked tree named Methusela, which is officially the current oldest living free standing organism on Earth.

They inhabit an exposed plateau 12,000 ft above sea level, subject to the harshest conditions in California. They survive by not growing tall, rather growing out, limbs twisting in agonized fashion with a firm hold on the earth. This is one of the roads I drove to get up there. It's pretty remote and pretty cool and its the highest road in california. From wiki:

Well the state owns the land its on. I saw that California State Parks were hiring people to maintain the town, do light carpentry or run the museum/giftshop and that you could even live in one of the homes for like 15 dollars a month. I would have been down for that
