If you read Billy's notes, it says that he preferred the hypno-swirl design that eventually made the box to have rings that get "fatter" as they expand out... and that's what we got. Good call. It looks a lot better that way.

It's cool to see the other designs, but Billy chose the right one.

What does it say in the first image just above the concentric circle box?

"Zero --> Jame's #####"

Also it's interesting to see a typed letter. I keep forgetting we didn't always have the internet.

The red writing is. Look at the word "Calgary" or whatever it says. It's definitely his hand writing.

i think it says "calgary monday", which would refer to this show, i believe: http://www.splra.org/wiki/index.php?title=Tsp1996-09-30

the release date of the tafh box is 1996/11/26, so that fits.

edit: i found a review of the "secret" show: http://ascendo.peterland.net.nz/Tour/CR96sep30.html

for some reason i think its pretty cool that bill basically designed the box, rather than some random person making the decisions (ie corporate level). maybe the cool part is that he made some good design choices. or maybe its just cool that he would take the time to sit down and think about something like that and not just blow it off.

The only one I really like on paper is the one they ended up going with but it would have been interesting to see what the other ones would have looked like if they had been made.

now i'm curious about alt art for the other albums. surely when making the album art for the pumpkins, the artists had several versions down in case billy rejected one of them.

Well, Billy's a bit of a control freak...and back when they were on top of the world the label didn't mind giving him nearly all the creative control!
I do find it amusing they're asking him about the hinges though. I mean, hinges, FFS!

I think he means alternate photo shoot pictures of the band members themselves (and NOT the "old" ones) inside the booklet?
