Default MCIS 3LP gatefold pics?

I was thinking about this the other day, and seeing that I'm unlikely to be owning it any time soon, I'd really like to see some good pics of the gatefold inlay and the booklet it came with. It must be a really nice package, shame it goes for so much on ebay.

(i am not selling or trying to promote this item)

however. as an owner of an unopened mcis 3lp, its comforting to know i can get at least $200 for it!

i've opened mine, listened to it, and enjoyed it. i'm like that with colectables though- i have a bunch of action figures that i played with. if i kept them in their packaging, i'd be swimming in it.

hey spkid- greetings from down the nys thruway- i'm your upstate ny neighbor.

I don`t get it, several seller on ebay have come up lately with a new version that doesn`t have the white box with or without the number and claim it`s a reissue.

Just like this one:
http://i2.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/d0/8a/0d99_1.JPG

But apart from ebay there`s nothing to find about such a reissue.

So I assume these new versions floating around on ebay are bootlegs?

Oh, I've seen those before.

Now it just has to be about twice as big and I'll be satisfied.

Long? Never heard of 'em.

The oldest CD I had (Neil Young Harvest Moon) came with those instructions on how to clean them and how they would get ruined if used on a turntable. The plastic was very good and thick, unlike the ones that come out nowadays.

i got one of those. (well, someone was nice enough to get it for me. i normally don't spend any money on bootlegs, but in this case i wanted to check it out for myself. and it wasn't as expensive as the ones on ebay, so.)

there are a lot of small differences between the official release (with the white box) and this "re-release" without the white box. there are little color differences everywhere. the labels have the same text, but are also labeled with an extra letter (from A to D, indicating the six different sides). the matrix numbers are different. in fact, the whole pressing is different: the grooves don't look the same. new pressing plates were made to create this "reissue". the book and the inner sleeves are made of very white paper. and so on...

basically, none of these differences necessarily makes this a bootleg. but if you add them up, and take into account that these only recently started popping up (most of them in the netherlands), without any word from the record company about this re-release, i think it's safe to assume that this is a bootleg. a very well made bootleg, but still, nothing official.

to me it looks like someone with the right equipment made scans of all the artwork and did the best they could to reproduce it. the result is close to the original. i think if you don't have the original, most people wouldn't even notice.

i haven't listened to the entire album, but i checked some songs already and i didn't immediately notice a quality problem.
a quality problem could give it away as a bootleg. but once again, nothing convincing here. very well made.

i've also seen a couple of yellow vinyl mcis 3lps showing up on ebay recently. my guess is that this is the same bootleg, only on yellow vinyl now.
(compare with the machina promo 12" bootlegs: i think there's three different ones of them. all on one vinyl, incomplete, but with the same tracklisting, one of them is even a picture disc.)

They were called long boxes, it was a lame attempt to prevent theft. Somewhere around 1990 there was a huge consumer backlash about the waste of paper caused by the extra useless packaging.

Thanks for your answer, I also noticed the auctions with the yellow vinyl and assumed that someone or several people just made this reissue on their own.

Longboxes were used because they allowed CDs to be sold in the same bins as vinyl. By themselves, CDs were too short to be visible. Longboxes were used to make them taller.

This made it easier for retailers to sell both side-by-side without having to invest in separate shelf-space for CDs.
