Default Deftones in the studio

http://deftonesinstudio.blogspot.com/

Kerrang!: It normally seems to take you years to release a new album. Why has this one happened so fast?

Chino: "We've certainly taken our time on the last few records but this one has happened very quickly. We got off tour and took a month off. Then we went into the studio and wrote a lot of music very quickly."

Kerrang!: It sounds like a very fertile period.

Chino: "It was. The most important thing we had to do was to break our habits and change the way we've done things for the last few years. One of the reasons the last few records took so long was because everyone was working separately. We would record our parts and then email them out without actually seeing each other. That has its positives but we really missed out on the creative process of all of us sitting in a room and writing together. This time, we were all together and that really helped. In fact, I'd say that our working relationship is better than it's ever been before. As a result, everything has improved
-our friendships and our lives. We're all really happy now.

Kerrang!: The last album had a very difficult birth. You weren't sure you wanted to be in the band and there were lots of inter-band tensions. Has that changed?

Chino: "There were lots of problems on the last album, definitely. The way we were working meant that communication in the band wasn't very strong. That's changed now that we've shifted our approach. Making that last record was seriously unhealthy experience. It just dragged on without much direction. Even the idea of the record was just to make something vague, and that's pretty much what we did. I liked it, but when we focus and work together, it's a lot better."

Kerrang!: How has the relationship between the band members improved?

Chino: "Over the last few years, a lot of the band members have had a few problems- divorces, money problems, life- and it has just been an unhappy time. We've all come out of that now. I hate to talk like its all rainbows and sunshine over here, but it is!"

Kerrang!: So you feel positive now?

Chino: "The reason we're in a band is because it's fun. It just wasn't fun back when we were making Saturday Night Wrist. I really didn't want to do it anymore, which is why I left the band to go and do the Team Sleep thing. I really wasn't sure if I was going to return to the band either. We had to take a break because we'd been going for 10 years straight and it was a relentless cycle of studio, touring, studio, touring. It just wasn't fun. But, having rediscovered our friendships, everything became worthwhile again. Every day just gets better and better now."

Kerrang!: What does the new material sound like?

Chino: "The songs are definitely weird, which is a breath of fresh air to me. I haven't been playing guitar on these new songs so Steph (Carpenter, guitar) has taken up the helm and that's worked out really well. He's been very creative has been writing very weird, melodic stuff. That's great because I want the album to be as weird as we can possibly make it without completely alienating people. If I had to compare it to any of our records, then I think it probably reminds me of White Pony the most. There's a lot of atmosphere and a lot of soundscaping. I couldn't' feel better about it at the moment."

-deftones

sounds pretty cool, although that disfunction 2 years ago led to my second if not favorite deftones album so who knows if them getting along is a good thing. i know that steph taking on all the guitar work is going to be interesting and pretty heavy, and words like atmosphere and soundscaping are good words in the deftones vocabulary.

doesn't sound like it, but on that site if you look at the actual mag article it says "autumn".

so i guess another october release. i could use a new deftones album for the summer though.

and i wish he wasn't going to abandon team sleep. it sounds like it was only a retreat, which is a shame.

wasn't team sleep supposed to have a slew of EPs over the course of 2008?

That's exciting to hear, though I share Garrett's sentiments when he says that the band dysfunction produced one of my favorite Deftones album. I'm very curious to hear what this new record sounds like, definitely.

Team Sleep should definitely release something official soon, though. Genius musicians all around.

yeah these guys are solid performers. s/t is my least favorite, but im still glad it was made, and a few of those tracks fucking kick.

white pony could be my favorite, but there's something about SNW thats just absolutely insanely sad about it. that album, starting on track 3 and skipping rats! is just a fucking ride to play at night.

i remember listening to it out on my porch this summer, late at night, drinking wine, smoking cigarettes, getting depressed and loving it.

Saturday Night Wrist was quite good overall. 100x better than their self-titled skull cover album that came before it; I thought they'd never recover.

Arrow The new album has a name now: eros

"The last two records have been a lot more impersonal," Moreno continued. "Once we started using computers, it got super impersonal. Everybody would come in separately and do their parts. We looked back to our sophomore album, where we wrote and recorded it and mixed it in four months, and that's still one of my favorite records we've ever done. We want to work in that way [again], all together in one room, and we just play everything until it's memorized, and then we'll record it live. That's what we did with our first records.".[39] Moreno stated that this album would be more up-tempo (as far as the drumming), going on to say that the past couple of albums have been more mid-tempo and that Abe Cunningham has been playing fast as of late. He also referred to the album as being "snappy". Moreno stated in an interview that the process for this album would be more raw and simplified after dissatisfaction with the long and "pieced-together" experience of recording Saturday Night Wrist.[40]

On January 14th, Chino posted an instrumental electronic beat that sounds similar to Team Sleep titled "You've Seen The Butcher" on the Deftones mypace and announced in a bulletin that the album would be called "Eros".

i don't know about up tempo. im disappointed to hear they're moving away from stw styling, however if hes influenced by around the fur then that couldn't be all that bad of a thing.

Around th Fur has some brutal screams. Dang, Chino can really shred his pipes. I hope these guys get it together again. I'd hate for 'em to just keep getting fatter and shittier. As long as Chino and Steph can get along things are looking up .
