I felt pretty sick last night, but I'm better today.

I had some really bad Mexican, that probably did it.

seriously though, let's talk philosophy. i want to hear all your beliefs and ruminations, theories and contentions. are you religious, are you in a cult, what informs your beliefs and why. what manner of esoteric subjects do you think about when you walk down the street but never talk about with anyone. i want to see 100+ pages of heated debate and flaming by this time tomorrow, let's get rollin

i'm simply too tired for a debate, but i was thinking about whether or not there are parallel universes, all with different people and different histories and different cultures, but tied together by the commonality of matter and physics

i guess just different outcomes of humanity

it was entertaining to say the least, but there's no way of knowing right now, so

but i think that if travel between the worlds was possible, it would be far more complex than just going through a wormhole.

the other day i was reading a pretty interesting theory about the correlation between white holes and black holes (in cosmology, not sexuality). basically, it proposes that when a black hole forms, the astronomical amount of matter that it consumes creates a big bang at its core which creates another universe that expands extra dimensions outside its parent universe.

the initial feeding of matter from the parent universe's black hole and the expansion that follows in the new universe could be thought of as a cosmological type of white hole. this type of white hole wouldn't be localized in space in the new universe so its horizon would have to be identified with the cosmological horizon.

i think ghosts might be products of parallel universes overlapping momentarily by accident. kind of like when you are tuning an analog radio and you can get a few stations partially at once.

but that this idea is more quasi-scientific daydreaming than philosophy.

I like it for time travel ideas, every possible state exists and you follow a path through the ones that contain the exact events of your reality, and if you travel back in time you're just backtracking along that path. You could screw around and it would just put you on a different path going forwards, so it wouldn't affect the reality you came from - so you wouldn't need to see any evidence of it in the past

So you mean we could possibly be transcending the boundaries of these universes every day and not know it? That's an interesting concept.

Well they wouldn't be discrete universes, unless time is granular or something. If you like you could look at it as each frozen moment branching off into an infinite (?) number of other possible moments, depending on what happens. A bit like choose your own adventure. One bunch of possible moments involves a future you appearing and saying 'my man', but I'm guessing you haven't experienced that - so your path would have avoided all of those branches so far. If you go back in time in the future, you'd backtrack to one of those branches and go down a route where you did appear. I don't know if this is in any sci-fi show

I read an engaging short story by Mark Twain called "The Mysterious Stranger" which was kind of the opposite of that -- it revolved around the idea that everyone's life is predestined and that every little facet affects the outcome. Even if one knew this fact, there was nothing they could do about it, because anything they did, even with that knowledge, was planned. The only way one could break away from their destiny was by superhuman intervention, which, in the story, was an angel. Every time the main character asked the angel to help his friends out by changing their destiny, the angel would make it to where they would die sooner than they were supposed to, because the rest of their life was going to be miserable.

(Sorry to get off on a tangent like that.)

So basically you're saying that every second you're alive, you're creating another, separate universe that's accessible and available to alteration without it affecting any of the other universes, as if everything went on behind a infinite number of closed doors?

But if your life is predestined, even getting someone to intervene is going to affect other people's predestined lives - so either the intervention itself was predestined, or the predestination can be changed (just not by humans)

What I'm saying with the universes thing is that you have this map of all possible existences, containing every state that could exist for each moment and every outcome of every event. If you think back to some big event in your life, imagine you'd done it differently and how your life would have diverted from the path it did take. It's just imagining that all those different paths could exist simultaneously, and you're just on one in particular right now. If you were to go back in time and 'change' something, you wouldn't actually be affecting this path because those things didn't happen on this path - you'd be hopping over to another one where those things do happen.

One cool question is that hopping over to another path could give you something that looks like the same reality with minor (if any) differences - with the same people. If these different versions of people all behave the same way, would that mean we all exist in multiple universes simultaneously (and behave according to what's happening in each of them) or would we all be kinda acting out a specific role without realizing it

i'm not sure i follow you here. if you hopped to another life path and it was virtually indistinguishable from your current path, are you asking whether all the people you know would perform exactly the same actions as on the other path, or if they would just have the same character traits? how would make any difference either way?
