what do you think of the current state of nascar?

i'll assume this is a serious thread and actually answer the question. if it's not, feel free to ignore.

I think the governing bodies are making severely misguided but well-intentioned changes to make it more appealing. What I don't understand is why they decided to make some of these rule changes at around the time of the sport's peak in popularity. They devised the stupid "Chase" playoff format in the hopes that they'd be able to build interest in the end of the season and compete with the NFL. They will never compete with the NFL. It's stupid to make such a drastic change like that. Gordon's 2007 season is a perfect example of how flawed this system is. This isn't a sport that is comparable to other sports that have playoff systems. Every other form of racing used a points system that was at least theoretically modeled in the same way as the old NASCAR points system. It makes more sense the old way, if you ask me.

The Car of Tomorrow is going through growing pains. but people really shouldn't complain about it. I am reasonably confident that no one will ever die as a result of a crash in a nextel cup car now that all these safety improvements have been made. They'll make it more competitive and make it behave better over the long run. But the safety measures needed to be taken as soon as possible.

ummm, i think that's all i have to say from a general standpoint.

I don't know what this is, but now I'm imagining two teams of cars driving at each other on a to-scale football field, firing a giant ball around with mounted catapults. I'd watch that, it sounds pretty awesome

i don't really know. i just find it all immensely entertaining. the key is finding someone to latch on to and root for.

it's 43 cars. and the order in the daytona 500 is set by finishing order of two qualifying races. the rest of the lineups for the year are set by qualifying sessions held on the friday before the race. and it is legal for guys to pass each other on the track under a green flag....

i'll give it that i can be interesting in very small time periods, say 5 laps tops, but any more then that is just too much. i can't understand how people can watch 500 some laps of this stuff

i can understand how it can be boring at points to a lot of people. i mean, i fall asleep during the races sometimes. and some tracks seem to always put on boring races (two 500-mile races at Pocono over the span of 2 months is just awful). but i even enjoy watching the races that i would consider to be boring from an objective standpoint.

...and the last 4 or 5 laps at restrictor plate tracks (daytona and talladega) are as entertaining as anything you will find in the world of sports. there is no doubt in my mind about that.

the men behind the scenes of competitive NASCAR teams are incredibly intelligent. it's a complicated sport.
