Default What did you do for charity this year?

Besides just sending cash, did anyone volunteer?

My Mom and I raised over $3,000 for a charity walk we did for the Anti-Cruelty Society (an animal shelter here in Chicago). That's about it, unfortunately. I had plans to make it over to the cat shelter with my friend but she's been so busy and she's the one that was going to introduce me and take me to the orientation and stuff. She's been helping out at Petco or Petsmart or whichever one it is doing adoption stuff so I think I might tag along with her on one of those trips.

No. I gave money to Greenpeace and Amnesty International, though.

We volunteer at the Humane Society once a month, and do quite a bit of volunteer work through our church.

Oh do you just mean for "the holidays"? I haven't done anything yet, I was thinking about getting some toys for tots together but don't they have strict guidelines now and they have to be wrapped and tagged and shit? I have to look into it, cuz I have bags of stuffed animals I'd love to drop off from my childhood - but I think I remember a few years ago reading that they had to be packaged and brand new. WTF kinda shit is that?

  • I volunteered at Mama's Kitchen which is a charity for single mothers with AIDS
  • Purchased Christmas presents for one family's kids at that charity
  • Volunteered at the senior citizen center here in town
  • Organized a charity drive at work that raised over $5000 for Becky's House for abused women and $1000 for the Safe at Home organization

I donate money to greenpeace monthly, among other things. I don't have the time to mention some of the others.

I don't have the time to volunteer anywhere. Its too much hassle with my current life expectations with school, work, and family. I do feel like one day becoming a mentor/big brother kind of guy to some kid who has no dad and shit.

Thats much futher down the road.

I was planning on doing the Big Brother thing but if you do that you really have to be there for the kid and I'm not prepared to do that

i bought presents where 100% of the proceeds go to animal causes and charities, and also helped in buying presents for a family in need (6 children and their parents)... nothing major and i wish I got more "involved" this year :/

I spent 4 weekends doing medical support for SC Special Olympics. While I enjoy doing volunteer work I didn't have much say in the matter as my girlfriend is the state medical director.

If I could, I'd volunteer for the Make-A-Wish foundation in honor of a close friend, but that's not really possible so instead we donate regularly. I feel bad throwing money at organizations without lending physical support, but options are limited.

i told a salvation army guy to, 'get that bell the fuck out of my face. he said, 'that's some holiday cheer you have there.' i said, 'fuck you, asshole.' then i went over to the nice lady at the other entrance who was asking nicely for donations and not sticking a bell in peoples ears and faces.

Don't feel bad, those organizations need people like you who have money to throw.

I'd love to be the person who gets to take dogs around to sick children and old people in the hospital. I wish my dumbass dog was calm enough to be able to do something like that but he's too crazy.

I've been volunteering through Boston Cares. If you live in a big city, there is probably a Hands On Network organization there, if you are interested. You can commit to doing a project long term or do a bunch of different things.

a friend of mine (that i used to do a lot of community service with in college) just joined that, and he has told me many good things. I live an hour outside the city but am still very interested in getting involved with that.. whats your take on boston cares/how long have you been with them?

I just started volunteering with them in September and I've enjoyed it. They actually have a lot of opportunities outside of the city, so if you have a car there's plenty of stuff you can do. You'd just have to find an orientation in a convenient location. It's nice to be able to do things that I care about and at times that are convenient. Everyone has been very kind and helpful, but they don't pressure you either. I'd highly recommend it.
