Default GPS recommendations?

Anyone buy one recently or have any experience with different models? They're getting very affordable.

Too distracting...they cause accidents and turn the map reading areas of the brain into mush.

i'm generally very good with maps, but GPS would be a nice insurance to have, or make it easier when you're going somewhere you're 75% sure of the way but cbf looking it up exactly.

Garmin Nuvi 350 or above.

Garmin is by far the best brand for the U.S. - they use Teleatlas mapping, far superior to Navteq (which is used by Magellan, TomTom, Google Earth, Mapquest, etc.).

Google Maps uses NavTEQ but the free Google Maps API uses TeleAtlas, which lends me to think that NavTEQ is better.

I know Garmin is the biggest brand but that probably means it's the most expensive too. I'm wondering if the smaller brands are that much worse considering how much cheaper they are.

Navteq is best for Europe, Teleatlas best for North America. They use different satellite technology; Navteq is perfectly fine is most areas, but TeleAtlas updates more often and has the most recent up-to-date maps for whatever reason.

TeleAtlas nearly always has more addresses stored in its database - but for price you pay and might not be necessary for you.

I've had Magellan, TomTom and Garmin. I will never not purchase a Garmin system - ease of use, updates, storage, screen resolution and maps are superior. Magellan makes some nice machines, but the screens just aren't up to Garmin's levels.

*Note I have a Garmin 350.

I had issues building an app recently with the Google Maps API and when I did the same search on maps.google.com it was fine. But that could be some sort of encoding in between.

http://www.gpsreview.net/navteq-vs-tele-atlas/ seems to indicate there's little difference.

I'm more concerned with the UI, responsiveness etc. A friend of mine demo'd a TomTom recently and it seemed fine. I don't really want anything fancier than I need and $200 is the max I'd shell out.

Are Garmin updates free?
