Ron Paul and hillary clinton. Ron Paul is the only one who can beat the dems. He will raise $8-$10 million tommorow shattering the sinlge day fundraising record. the polls are little deceiving because they only show people who where registerd republicans during the last elections and they count people with land line phones. The people who participate in the phone polls are asked a bunch of inappropriate questions including questions about there sex life when they say they are supporting Ron Paul. That can make alot of people hang up the phone. The ron Paul blimp is airborne, the millions he's raising tommorow, he'll finish the 4th quarter with $18-$20 million to buy more tv and radio time. Thats alot of publicity. Ron Paul for sure.

it must suck to have religion such an integral part of politics

you guys could be debating really important social/economic issues, but instead everyone's wondering whether this guy or this girl believes we descended from primates or not

Everyone's going around saying how they hate Bush in America these days right? Surely the way to fix that, then, is to elect President Huckabee, who is even more of a religious zealot.

No. Man did not descend from apes. Mike Huckabee at least descended from something much stupider. And if that man ends up President of the United States I whole heartedly and fully support tearing up the alliance between Australia and you guys which, thanks to our pitiful Labor government, we've started doing already.

I'm tired of people who are merely religious being labeled as being "zealots." Huckabee was the governor here in Arkansas for many many years, and never during that time was he ever "zealous" in promoting his religion through the use of state government. Was it ever a secret that he was a religious guy? No. But that does not a "zealot" make.

Really. I say this as someone who does not support Huckabee: if people do not stop trying to paint the man's religion as his biggest negative instead of actually attacking his bad stances on nearly any issue you can choose, then it's going to backfire big time and he's going to get elected. All this "Huckabee is a religious zealot" hyperbole is accomplishing is reinforcing the "us vs. t**** mentality evangelicals have that will drive them right into the polls.

Whether or not he's a religious "zealot" he has the support of the religious "zealots" and panders to the "Conservative base" who reject simple things like the fact that the earth has been around for more than 6,000 years and that dinosaurs and men didn't live togather in the Grand Canyon.

Then I guess his son is! He was just on CNN talking about how his father is a man of faith and basically that faith in God is going to carry them to victory in NH.

If we disregard parties, the total votes look like this:

24.5% Obama
20.5% Edwards
19.8% Clinton
11.4% Huckabee

The GOP is in trouble.

The guy is a fucking priest, for god's sake. Not just a mere, casual interest he has in religion, like someone like, say, George W. "Presidential Prayer Team" Bush.

In 2000, the last time there was a caucus in both parties, Republicans turned out 87,000 voters, while Democrats produced 59,000. There are around 600,000 registered Democrats in Iowa, and about 550,000 Republicans, but when you consider that on caucus nights, Republicans just need to show up and point to a name, while Democrats are committing to two hours of public wrangling, it's not a surprise that more Republicans show up to be "first in the nation."

Except for yesterday.

When the Des Moines Register poll was predicated on a turnout of 200,000, I was scornful. And they were wrong -- but only because they were too conservative.

Last night, the Republicans produced around 115,000 voters -- an impressive 30% increase.

But the Democrats turned out 236,000. That's an increase of roughly one whole helluva lot.

And it's a huge indicator of both how energized Democrats are this year, and how ready independents are to put their chips on the D line.

Hillary is going to provide a lot of entertainment as time goes on, imo. she's caught up in this idea that she cannot lose as the democratic candidate. she's going to be in for a rude awakening and i'm not going to hold back my laughter.

poor chelsea she looks like she's in eternal misery standing up there with those two

i like Obama but can he stick to hearing the voice of the people and service to the greatest good. if he can, i think he is the perfect choice. the hope would be that he can pull together a team of political allstars to help him and then taked the best ideas from all spectrums of the political arena. So far he's the guy that appeals to the broadest spectrum of population, including the under 30 voters. he talks about this so far "red and blue... we are the united states" but can he pull it off? I certaintly hope so.

This is 100% true. You cannot attack a candidate's faith because his beliefs are too universally appealing. Stick to addressing actual issues.

well that's not how karl rove would do it

issues are boring, the american people don't like "issues." what they want is something easy. Al Gore is BORING! do you want a boring president? No I don't either. I can't imagine a boring person being president, seems so outrageous. Kerry is a flip flopper because he can't stop talking. If the democrats are taking the offensive and already painting Huckabee as a religious wackjob then they're moving in the right direction. People can't think of complexities, they want everything to play out predictably, with the same old cliches. New and unexpected things make them feel confused, and scared.
