none of you are getting the point. at all. i am not defending tipping as an institution. i am saying that until the institution crumbles, it is completely unjust to not tip people who are not getting paid by their employer. yes, it seems absurd, but why punish the people doing the service?

how so? again, if you don't like the practice of tipping, then don't put yourself in a position to have to do it.

yeah i guess the only think i took issue with was your refusal to tip if the food is cold, because while you say the delivery person isn't doing his job, it's more likely that he is and something beyond his control affected the service. in which case you should call the place you ordered from and make them make up for it.

it's like giving a waitress in a resutaurant a shitty tip if the kitchen is really backed up and it takes a long time to get your food. it's not her fault.

Well if you obsess as much as you seem to have in this thread about it, and get so angry - you're going to hate your job and be miserable. But that's the point, it's all relative. I don't think it's a shitty tip. I think 10% is a decent tip for the service I get from a delivery driver. I think 15-20% is a decent tip for a server. If you get my pizza here in less than the amounted time and you're polite at the door, if I go to a restaurant and get exceptional service...well then I'll give you more because you deserve it.

You're an idiot. Maybe it's just because you live out in those richie suburbs that only have like one pizza place for miles and miles.

I still don't understand how if the place is busy that it would mean my food would have to be cold. How about the driver, who does this all the time, says to the boss hey, I think there's too many orders here for me to fill in time to get everyone's food to them without the last guy's being cold.

I've ordered pizza from this one place in particular and I love them. No matter how busy they are, they're competant enough to be able to figure out a way to get all orders to the homes, nice and hot and ready to be eaten. The only time I've ever gotten food that was cold was like I mentioned, the driver can't find the house because we're in this weird little area of streets...I have no pity for that. Get a GPS get some fucking mapquest, motherfucker. It's called DOING YOUR JOB. It's what you, me and the rest of us are expected to do in order to get paid. *gasp*

And besides, I've heard that it's a common thing for delivery drivers to put known "bad tippers" on the bottom of the pile and deliver to the people who give good tips first. So fuck that. Like Glass's point about we're only tipping to ensure our food doesn't get fucked with. Fuck that.

Edit: on the server note, I've had waitresses that are sitting their giggling with their girlfriends while I see my food sitting up there getting cold. You're not doing your job. You don't deserve a tip.

it's not their only job. it's a job they work on friday and saturday nights, sacrificing any free time they may have for themselves.

have you ever worked at a food establishment? just because you can't see how it happens doesn't mean it can't happen. drivers are usually, you know, actually driving and not in the restaurant. orders come in, they go to the kitchen. the kitchen makes the orders in the order they are received. then prepare them for delivery. when drives get back from a run, they grab what they can deliver in one trip and take it. it's not like everyone sits down and discusses the most efficient way to make and deliver an order whenever it comes in. that just isn't possible.
