i hate tipping. it's a stupid system. i rather just go walk over to the kitchen and get the food myself then sit down.

I would much prefer adding a tip of my own descretion rather than having to pay an additional standard fee. I've never worked a tip-oriented job myself, but I've talked to some who have and they say that with those jobs, they were always dependent on the tips. Whether it's the delivery guy or a waiter, it doesn't take much for me to be satisfied, as long as they don't do stuff like what I stated above, I understand how much the tips mean to 'em so I'm always generous.

I don't tip delivery drivers as much as I do in a restaurant. Like someone already stated, a server is SERVING you, they're giving you refills and getting you extra sauce and napkins, refilling your salt and pepper shakers. A server has to be polite and communicate with you. A delivery driver is driving your food to you, and maybe saying "Hi, your total is ____" - so he shouldn't get a tip equal to or more than a server. Unless he wants to sit in my living room and get me napkins and pop and ask me how my meal is... At least, that's what I think.

I usually tip about 10% for delivery.

Besdies, it seems every new place we order from can't figure out how to get to our house so by the time they finally figure it out our food is cold. One time the idiots didn't get our phone number and the guy was driving around for an hour.

None of the delivery drivers I know do-- that's what the TIPS are supposed to help with. A-duh!

I tip delivery drivers more than servers 'cause of all the things Sean mentioned, and also because of all the crap you posted, too. People generally tend to have a shitty view towards delivery drivers and it really stinks. How much I tip a server is determined on a case-by-case basis, but I at least give a few bucks to delivery drivers, [almonst] no matter what.

Well if tips are supposed to cover the cost of gas and maintenance then I don't see why anyone would be a delivery driver because they'd have to get tipped WAY more than 20%. In fact, if that's the logic, I think they should get at least 50%. A few bucks isn't going to cover all that.

One of my best friends was a delivery driver and I'm pretty sure he got paid a few bucks more an hour than a server. I'll have to ask him.

Either way, I still think being a delivery driver is a lot less work than being a server and therefore deserves less percentage.

I think the whole % of bill thing is supposed to be related to the class of service you're getting varying from establishment to establishment (based on the cost of their food) and not the actual food you are getting.

hah i tip delivery people usually based on price under 20, your getting 2-3 dollars plus the actual change...between 20-50 i give 5 plus depending on how fast they get there

Disagree with me on this topic, sure, but the absolute most USELESS person in the world that should never be tipped is the person that takes your order when you call in an order to go, and then hands it to you when you come to pick it up. Well, tipping the people that made the food is always nice, but for my specific situation I was just a middle man that, at the most, grabbed the salad dressing and put the utensils in the bag before collecting the tip.
