Default anyone got tips to getting a soundboard.

ive recorded a show or two and plan on recording 2 upcoming shows this month. i know its not very likely to get a soundboard patch but does anyone have any tips that might help short of asking and/or performing sexual favors. i.e. names to drop. also what do i need to bring, such as special cables, if by chance i should be able to get one?

just asking the band/engineer is your best chance. I guess be ready to record from XLR or RCA. Very few boards (any?) have 1/8" or 1/4" outs

I've come across 1/4" before - Gypsy Tearoom in Dallas. It was mono as well.

Asking as early as possible helps a lot.

yea i was gonna bring rca an 1/4. didnt even think about xlr. thatd be a good idea. i should be able to get there real early too so thats good. i also got the benefit of seeing modest mouse at one of the same venues so i already got a pretty good idea of where a good spot to record would be. i might have to get my friend to help ask because i am such a pussy with that kind of thing. i hope the venue isnt gonna be bitchy about it but if they find it on me which i hope they just dont, i dont want it to look like im sneaking it in, like im doing something wrong. if they do who should i say to talk to to get the ok? just the band or gooch or what?

thanks for the help guys. hopefully my recordings turn out ok. im still a novice but who knows. i just figured someone should record them because i dont think the shows around utah and idaho (the two im going to) usually get covered very well. i just bought an r-09 for it and am thinking about also upgrading to some core sound mics from the no name binaurals i have. does anyone think its worth the upgrade or should i stick with the ones i got? i cant remember the brand name. i got them so long ago.

and whats the diff between a fixed-response battery box and one thats not? is it that you can use a bass roll off filter with a fixed-response battery box?

Bring 1/4" and XLR (female) plugs. I've never seen a board with RCA outputs.

The bass roll off of a "fixed-response" box is fixed (usually a 1 or 2uF capacitor which gives a roll-off well below 10Hz), whereas other ones have switches where you can switch in different capacitors to give more roll-off. IMO a fixed one with hardly any roll off is best, so long as you're not over powering the input stage of your recorder. It is easier to remove bass through DSP on the PC than it is to bring it back when you've set the roll-off too high.

The band's FOH sound engineer definately knows it's open taping, but the venue usually doesn't.

i've seen desks that have RCA, mono 6.5mm (1/4inch) jacks, xlr (3 pin). all female on the desk other than xlr, usually male on desk.

i don't think you'll be getting board permission unless you have some history with someone. especially since they've said they are recording all shows off the board anyway. i can't see them giving others access to what might appear on an official release.

really? when did they say that? thatd be sweet if theyre recording them all off the board. although if the do theyll prolly release them as mp3s. i doubt i will too but it doesnt hurt to try. unless of course i get thrown out of the venue, but how often does that happen?

well actually the more people that piss them off with any open taping issues the more likely they are to change their mind and their stance.

recording info originally from this thread:

Plus, on the rare days off, Lemon has been heading into local studios to mix the performances for possible live CD or DVD releases. He is recording every show from a MADI split off the DiGiCo D5 console into a Pro Tools HD3 rig for archival purposes. Backstage, another pair of engineers handle two 96k Pro Tools rigs to record the shows for special releases.

if you see spboi240, ask him if you can get access to his. he usually brings his own soundboard to the show to make audsbd recordings.

good advice, although i have seen boards with RCA outs. the northstar bar and the first unitarian church here in philly both have em. and i believe the khyber too. small rock clubs, sure... but still.

i host the open mic at the fire in philly, and i use this board:

http://www.mackie.com//products/32-8...OOMED_32.8.jpg

so naturally, my RCA cables won't cut it. i usually just use RCA>1/4" adapters.

anyone know what kind of loss, and to what extent, the audio suffers from doing that?
