They might have been marketed better and hit mainstream but in your idealism limp bizkit are "geniuses"

not at all. Nirvana and the rest of grunge came out of an era full of glamour and being pretty. an era of completely fake music written by fake people. all that shit for an entire decade, then grunge came out. Grunge was real music that was written by real people, that came from an era of shit. most grunge bands didnt even have talent. kurt is genius because he took a sloppy gunge band with no talent and transformed them into musicians. the unplugged mtv show proved that.

besides, what one sees as musical genius, another sees as shity music. If i say Tool is the greatest band ever, big deal. it doesnt matter if you dont think so. I may think tool is musical genius and you may think drowing pool is (even though its the worst). musical genius is opinion based. now im drunk and im going to bed so im through.
peace.

Kurt was a genuis....as is many other artists... i often wonder too... what music would be like if his death didn't occur..
Sure he wasn't god.. but he was a good musician. Whether people believe he was there at the right time and place or not, his genuis is true, unplugged and in utero showed this as stated earlier.

1 a : plural genii : an attendant spirit of a person or place b : plural usually genii : a person who influences another for good or bad

Regardless, 'genius' is used way too liberally on this board.

You also have to consider how much of Nirvana's success came from luck and how much came from actualy proactivity. The band is great, and their music did the music industry an amazing amount of good, but I wouldn't go as far to call Kurt a genius simply because his music happened to have major impact on music.

I know, I'm quite cynical about it, but that is really how I feel.

Then apparently he did a shitty job of "saving" us.

haha, its not like they released Nevermind, and then all the "shitty" music just dropped off the face of the earth. Kurt Cobain didn't save us from anything, he just distracted us for a few years. All of that "shitty" music that Kurt saved us from was still going strong during Nirvana's reign, and was still going strong the second he killed himself.

And there's a big difference from being a musical genious, and being a good songwriter, or ripping off the pixies (not that there's anything wrong with that.) Nevermind consists of a bunch of really good hooks, words that were hard to understand, a video that everybody went apeshit for, and a bunch of shitty power chords. Good stuff? Sure. Classic album? Why not? Genious? Bullshit.

If you go and look at the 10 years ago charts on billboard, Nevermind, Ten, and Blood SUgar Sex Magik are the only good things on it.

The rest is just as bad as it always was. Music is always the same, there's 4 or 5 good things on the charts, the rest is complete crap. The band did have a huge impact, there are a lot of bands that would have never gotten major label deals and platinum records without them, but it's not like the early 90's was an endless sea of beautiful music.

I mean, think about it. Candlebox? Nirvana allowed that band to be signed and pollute the airwaves. Thanks Kurt!

totally. people don't seem to realize that the 'alternative revolution' was just record companies going "oh, this sound must be hip now" and signing a bunch of new shitty bands and grunge fashion appearing in vogue, etc.

then again, that kind of thing was what disgusted kurt to the point that he was going to break up nirvana anyway.

if you dont think grunge pulled us out of a musical hole then fine. and if you think he just got lucky thats fine too. but i think hes a genius, lots of people think so too. so it is opinion based. and maybe nirvana is the reason behind a lot of shitty bands but id rather listen to candle box over a motley crue influenced band any day. and if his genius is such bullshit then why dont you do what he did? he wasnt that great at guitar, his voice wasnt the best either, so wouldnt it be easy? well... if he isnt a genius it would be easy... wouldnt it?
the genius is how he used what little talent he had to make great music.

lol, he's one of the best songwriters of his generation. The man had talent pouring out of his ears.

Good song writer + good marketing + luck just doesn't equal genious.
