Default the marked were pretty awesome, really

and ron roesing had some serious drum chops. if you haven't heard mastery + conjecture the whole way through...do it.

they might've had a crappy sound and horrible vocals/cheesy goth lyrics but they had a shitload of potential and made some really interesting music. easily as different and unique as anything sp ever did, imo. diverse and progressive yet accessible. it was really going somewhere.

just interested in exploring how billy developed his musical style. seems like he knew what he was doing from before he even picked up a guitar. and who's to say some of his earlier stuff can't be as good as his pumpkins output?

he once said that his early music sounded like a car crash. and he didn't mean that in a positive way.

not in the general sense, perhaps. but listen to mastery+conjectury, really showcases some of his technique. good drummer.

he pretends to be modest. he likes, or at least cares about, every song he's ever put his name to.

the marked had some good ideas, but no outline for what they wanted song by song. it was like a bad acid trip. some really cool things going on, but the terrible things that make you want to claw off your face don't stop.

with some good production and studio time, they could have been bearable. as it is, however, they are not.

maybe, maybe not. in the same interview he said that people think he likes everything he's ever done, but he doesn't.

that's still harsh. they had alot of flaws, namely in vocals and production, but put in context, i can let all that slide. billy, ron and dale were 18 years old, living in a garage in a town far from home, with no transport, no money, only a shitty 4 track or whatever billy had, but they were prolific and made some wildly creative music that is way more interesting than can be said for most bands, regardless of generation. and they made the most of what little they had. i think that is a great success that anyone should be proud of. its a great little legacy they've left for us.

but, back to the music. yes it is like a bad trip and maybe lacks focus in the sense that it doesn't have its own defined sound...but so what? at that age, they were still making some really different and cool songs that don't really sound too much like what other goth/new wave bands were doing around the time. the distorted guitars sounded dreadfully crusty and the vocals were weak, but they had good riffs, melodies, structures, drums, bass, and just ideas in general. from all angles. they would have been a great band. billy is full of shit if he says he's embarrassed by the marked phase.

anyone who doesn't appreciate and respect the marked is a tool.

I think all of their stuff had potential and that some people don't appreciate it because it wasn't professionally done production-wise. My only critism was Dale's vocals. Billy's were not perfect, but his always seemed quite a bit better. Dale's always sounded like he was trying to sound like Robert Smith.

heh, i actually kindof like dale's voice. billy seemed pretty shy while dale just sounded like he wanted to go for it the whole time. i think dale was trying too hard most of the time and ended up sounding faggy as a result.

I know they were young and had no money but it doesn't make up for the sad state of songwriting for that band. There are plenty of bands that were young and broke and created near masterpieces. The Marked did not write good songs. The end.

not great songs, maybe. but their musical potential was enormous and they wrote some really unique and interesting tunes that easily rival some of the pumpkins output. you wouldn't think "oh lets put on that marked cassette" and sing along to murder mix or whatever like it was a great song, but they were exceptionally talented writers for their age, doing their best to experiment with their sound and made some special music. i mean, how closely do you have to listen to hear that the marked was basically sp waiting to happen? its good stuff.

i've been meaning to ask for a while..
is there any marked stuff out there that's not on rspaa?
http://rspaa.niluje.net/data/Demos/Pre-Pumpkins/
if so, would someone mind uploading?
for instance, the scary neurotic song from the vid. is a diff [better] version than the one on rspaa.

i like the marked. i think many of the songs are actually good. no doubt cause i love all the bands that influenced it [cure, new order, bauhaus, early u2, etc] it's fun to be able to hear the 4track demos of your fav. artist that went on to do such grand things. cut out the high frequencies w/ the tape hiss and the production is pretty good for teenage home recordings, imo. better than a lot of mine lol.
still wanna know what drum machine he had.

np: pelican
awesome guitar sounds.

you could say that their stuff is laughable [in a negative way], to me that's part of what makes it worthwhile. lighthearted and 'gothy' at the same time.

stuff like murder mix, a day at the circus, zieg heil makes me feel good/creative.
